Prolouge[edit | edit source]

It had been four week since the "incident" and the whole town was still rattled to the core. Joan was taking it the hardest. It was hard to believe, everyone was shocked. How could her own daughter do something so bizarre? She wasn't sure why but she knew people wanted answers. There was a knock at the door. Joan grabbed her cane and answered the door. Two reporters stood close together on her welcome mat. They seemed to be squirming at the chance to get the lead on the biggest story of their careers.

"Hello Mrs. Combs?" one asked.

"Ms." she replied.

They stared at her anxiously as if she were about to give the whole interview right there.

"Come in, come in." She said to the two young rookies.

The two snapped out of the daydream trance and came inside. Looking around the house the two noticed it was an older home but with all new amenities. Next to the stairs was the oldest relic in the house, a grand piano. It appeared to not have been played in quite sometime.

"Do you boys want anything to drink?" Joan asked.

"Uhh, no thanks." one of them chimed in.

Joan chuckled to herself. Have being a reporter so long ago she knew how important a story like this was to them.

"I suppose you want to start the interview as soon as possible?" she remarked.

The two looked at each-other for a brief moment and looked back at her.

"Sorry." One of the rookies sheepishly replied.

"Well sit down and let's start this as soon as possible." Joan said patiently. The two scooted their chairs close to the table. While one pulled out a notepad the other pulled out a recorder.

"Go ahead Stan, ask her the questions." the one with the notepad gestured to Joan.

"Okay Uh," he fiddled with the tape recorder and continued "What do you think caused your daughter, Deborah, to do this?"

As she sighed Joan said, "She was such a sweet girl. No one could believe she would do such a thing." She began to tear up. "I think, her problem was she loved too much. I think that is why she would do something so gruesome."

Chapter One: New Beginings[edit | edit source]

The Combs family moved to Sunset Valley in the summer, a new start was just Joan wanted. Her job in the journalism career required her to move to the valley. Scott and Deborah weren't so happy though. Scott had to quit his Job he loved so much and leave behind his buddies. Deborah wasn't happy either, she had to leave all of her friends behind and start fresh. Deborah was never good at keeping up with relationships, much like her father. The family moved in down the street from one of Joan's old friends. She and Joan quickly caught up and reminisced about the good old days. A few days after settling in the Bachelor Family brought some baked goods over as a welcoming gift. Joan greeted them while Deborah peered out from behind her mother.

"Hello there, my name is Jocasta, this is my husband Simis and my two children, Micheal and Bella. We wanted to bring you some cookies and a homeowner's association application." she said.

"Why thank you! And this must be Bella." she said gleefully as she bent down to Bella's eye level.

Bella hid back behind her mother's legs blushing, as little girls do. At that moment Deborah and Bella looked at each-other, they both smiled.
"H..Hi." Deborah said nervously.

"Hey." Bella replied.

"Come in, Come in." Joan said.

"Is that a see-saw I see?" Jocasta asked.

"Why yes it is," Joan responded with a smile "why don't you two go play."

Soon everyone was inside but the girls.

"Hi, my name is Deborah" she said.

"Mines Bella," she replied "so you want to play on your see-saw."

"Yeah." Deborah replied.

The two began to see-saw for hours. They chatted about meaningless things and soon forgot about the world around them. They became good friends. Over the next few weeks the two became very close between constant sleepovers or staying up all night chatting on the phone. Deborah loved having a person she could trust. But what would happen next changed the way she lived forever.

Chapter Two: New Friends[edit | edit source]

As the weeks went by Joan became comfortable enough to introduce her family to her old friend, Lilly. Eventually Scott, Joan and Deborah all went over to meet her. When the family arrived in the living room they were greeted by a young boy.

Lilly Carver (to the left) and Joan Combs (to the right) converse the about good old times.

"Hello" the boy said.

"Hello Damion," Joan replied "this is my family, my husband Scott and my daughter, Deborah."

"Can I call you Debs?" Damion asked.

"Yeah, I guess." she replied with a shrug.

Calling from the other room Lilly asked "Do you guys want something to drink?"

"Sure." Scott replied.

Joan shot him a look and then the two walked in to the other room.

"So what do you do for fun around here?" Deborah asked.

"I'll show you Debs." He said extending his hand.

She took his hand as he led the way.
Deborah and Damion.

He led her to the back yard where there were lots of trees. Deborah looked over the scene of trees and grass with joy, she didn't have anything like this in her backyard! He let go of her hand and ran towards a hammock hung between two trees. Observing the grass she saw his yard was littered with bugs and small animals. She bent down and let a small squirrel-like animal sniff her finger. She giggled quietly as it licked her fingers. Damion came over to join her. Soon the two took turns holding what they later found out to be a chinchilla, while chatting out in the yard until it was time for Deborah to go home.

"Bye Damion, I had fun." she said with a smile.

"You should keep him." Damion said.

With a nod and a smile she left with her family and the small animal. Deborah was happy, she knew Damion was her friend. She liked having people she could trust around her. Though, her biggest fear was loosing them, she hated it when people left and soon her fear was going to become a reality.

Chapter Three: Goodbye[edit | edit source]

Deborah and her friends were spending a lot of time together. She was always spending the night at Bella's house or having dinner at Damion's. So much time that her parents rarely saw her. Never seeing much of her underlying problems in the marriage soon came out. Joan and Scott began fighting more often. Joan tried to not fight with Scott in front of Deborah but sometimes it was harder to do so.

"Joan, I can't stand this!"

"Oh please, Scott you're overreacting."

"Am I? You made me move out here. I didn't want to and neither did Deborah."

"Oh really? When was the last time you even had a conversation with her?"

"Does it matter?"

"Yes, she's your daughter! Scott just knock it off. You were like this at Lilly's house. Stop with the attitude."

"The attitude, attitude? You made me leave my job and friends. You didn't even care about what I wanted."

"Keep it down you'll wake her."

"What do you care Joan? You only care about yourself!"

"I did what was best for us."

By this time Deborah was sitting at the top of the staircase listening in.

"Best for us or best for you?"

"The schools here are better!"

"I don't care."

"How could you say that?"

"I loved her but we moved away!"

Silence filled the room as Joan was trying to understand what he was saying.

"What are you trying to say Scott?"

"Never-mind."

"No tell me."

Scott half whispered, "Dina.."

"Caliente?"

"..Yes"

With shock and awe clearly filling her face Joan said, "the Calientes are tramps."

"Don't talk about her like that!"

Joan scoffed in disbelief,"She just wants your money."

"How would you know?"

"It was never about us, was it? When did you plan on telling me you were going to leave?"

"It's not like that I-"

"You were just going to leave Deborah and I? She is so young! What-"

"I never loved Deborah!"

Deborah desperately tried to fight tears.

Scott continued,"When I found out you were pregnant couldn't believe it. I was so scared."

She stared at him while boiling with rage.

"I didn't know how to be a dad, I didn't want to. But, it was too late."

"Why did you marry me?"

"Because, I thought I loved you."

"You THOUGHT you loved me?!"

"No, I mean I love you both but, I'm not just the best role model for her."

"Get out."

"What will you tell Deborah?"

"She doesn't have to tell me anything." she said as she made her way down the stairs. "Goodbye."

Scott looked up at his daughter before shutting the door behind him.

"I'm so sorry Deborah. I'm sorry!"

"It's not your fault." She relied.

It's mine.

Chapter Four: Something Special[edit | edit source]

"Mom did you get the cake?"

"No sweetie, i'll get it this weekend."

"MOM! It's Friday!"

"I'm just kidding. Calm down honey everything will be fine."

"I want it to be perfect."

Joan was in the kitchen mixing up some dip for the party tonight. She looked at her daughter with suspicion. She knew that face, she was planning something. She pondered a few moments before asking, "So... is Damion coming?"

Deborah's cheeks flushed red, "Maybe,I-I don't know, ... I-I-I'm not his mom, God" and rushed upstairs.

Joan chuckled to herself, her little girl was growing up. She knew that this day would come. 'Sixteen years old' she thought to herself. With a sigh she put the dip in the fridge and double checked the guest list, Damion was on there. Scott wasn't, 'Thank goodness' she thought.

"You look fine dear," she called up the stairs. She knew Deborah was fussing with her hair. She chuckled again "You had better get down here. I see cars in the driveway."

And at that she ran down the stairs and opened the door.

Out of breath she said, "H-Hey Bella."

"Hi..? Are you okay?"

"Yeah come upstairs with me."

The two girls ran upstairs. Joan smiled to herself and went to watch T.V.

Upstairs Bella was being nosy as usual while Deborah fed Chi - Chi the chinchilla.

"So..., Debs."

"Yeah?"

"How's Chi - Chi?"

"Good? I guess? I have to clean his cage."

"Okay you do that, i'll just be here on the bed."

Deborah looked at her and rolled her eyes. When she looked away Bella quickly reached under Deborah's pillow, pulling out an old journal. Deborah didn't notice.

Bella stood up on Deb's bed and cleared her throat before reading aloud, "We went to the movies today and on our way Damion asked if he could sit next to me on the bus, he asked to sit next to ME..."

Deborah realized what she was reading as she was leaning on the inside of the cage, "HEY!" she yelled as she hit her head on the screen lid.

Continuing Bella read, ".. He then asked me if I would sit next to him at the movies."

"Bella give it back!" She shouted, now having gotten out of the cage.

"... I think he is sooo cute," she continued to read while making kissy faces.

Deborah jumped and in one quick motion she grabbed the journal from her and landed on both feet.

"Wow, that deserves an Olympic medal," Bella said trying to get out of trouble.

Deborah stared at her then went back to cleaning the cage.

"So are you going to tell him?" she asked.

"Tell who what?" Deborah asked.

Bella shoved her playfully,"Tell him. He likes you."

"Yeah sure, and I'm a fairy." she responded.

"Debs, I'm telling you the truth. I know because Mortimer told me."

She stopped cleaning the cage and looked at Bella, "Really?"

"Yeah, he swears on it Deb."

She stood there a moment trying to process what Bella just told her, "I like him."

"I KNEW IT!" Bella squealed. She slammed the cage almost getting Deb's fingers in the process.

"Jeez, calm down Bella."

---

The party was in full swing and Damion hadn't shown up yet. Deborah was getting antsy. "He's not here Bella."

"He'll be here. He's coming with Mortimer."

At that moment Mortimer's Porsche appeared in the driveway.

"He's here!" Deborah said nervously.

Bella gave her a shove off the porch towards the car. Deborah waved to Mortimer as she walked passed him. Damion got out of the passenger's side and closed the door. Mortimer locked the car with a remote from the porch. Deborah looked back and saw the two making-out on the porch. She looked back at Damion and flashed a half-smile.

"Wow I get the star-treatment. You meeting me out here when you could be inside with all your friends." Damion emphasized as he walked up to her.

"Oh, yeah." She said as she looked at her feet.

Damion tapped her shoulder and asked, "You want to go in the garden?"

"Yeah, I-I'd like that."

The two walked into the garden and Damion looked at her, "How are you?"

"I'm okay."

"Have you seen your dad in a while?"

"No, I don't want to talk about him right now..."

"Oh, I'm sorry I shouldn't have-"

"No it's not your fault it's just-"

"You look nice" Damion said desperately trying to change the subject.

"Oh thanks, you do to."

It grew quite for a moment. Damion looked at the porch and saw Mortimer whisper to Bella, I love you. He looked back and Deborah, "You think those two will always be together?"

"Yeah, probably."

"Why don't you have a boyfriend?"

"I-I like someone who isn't available."

"Oh" Damion looked at his feet.

"Something must be magical about our feet."

Damion looked up confused, "What?"

"Oh, nothing, it's just, we keep staring at them."

He chuckled then it grew silent. In attempt to break the silence both of them spoke at the same time.

""I like you""

""Wait what?""

"I thought you liked someone else."

"Like you Damion."

"You do?"

"Yeah."

"Since when?"

"I don't know."

"So where does that leave us?"

"I-I don't know. Um, can I do something?"

"Yeah sure, Debs."

She leaned in and kissed him.

Chapter Five: True Love[edit | edit source]

As the weeks passed Deborah found herself falling in love with Damion. The two had been dating for almost a month now and had no idea how to conduct herself on dates, it seemed so easy for Bella. Deborah was confused, why couldn't she gt the hang of things? She started asking Bella for help.

The phone rang several times before anyone answered.

"Hello."

Deborah was so relieved when she heard Bella's voice on the other end.

"HEY, ITS DEBORAH" she said very promptly.

Bella laughed, "I know, it's called caller id."

"Oh" Deborah was embarrassed, "I'm worried."

"About what?"

"It's about me and Damion."

"What about it? OH MY GOD, did you guys break up?!"

Unfortunately for drama loving Bella this was not the case. It all started a few weeks ago when Damion and Deborah went on their first date.

"I'll have the bacon burger with a diet soda please."

"And for you ma'am?"

"Oh" Deborah didn't know the first thing about dates and a hundred questions zipped through her head, 'what should I do', 'who's paying?', 'what do we talk about' 'what happens if I finish early', 'what happens if I eat to slow', 'what if-'

"Ma'am?"

Deborah was knocked out out of her trance like state. "I'll have what he's having."

They handed the waitress the menus and looked back at each other. Damion smiled and she just looked down.

"What's wrong" Damion asked.

"Oh, i-i'm just so, so" she didn't want to say nervous, would that freak him out?

He reached for her hand and with a smile he said "Don't be nervous."

The waitress came back with their drinks.

"Here you go you two."

"Thank you" Deborah whispered. That's all she knew what to say.

Damion could see she was feeling awkward so he did most of the talking. Eventually the food arrived and Damion dug in. Deborah on the other hand felt awkward and ate slowly.

"Whats wrong?" Damion asked with a full mouth.

She giggled, "nothing."

As soon as the meal ended Damion reached for his wallet.

"Oh, let me pay" Deborah insisted.

"No, it's okay, I've got it."

Damion paid for the meal and Deborah left a tip.

On the way out Damian asked,"You okay?"

"Yeah"

Damion looked at her funny and replied, "Well, I need to go home now."

---

Bella listened as Deborah explained everything that went on.

--- On the second date Deborah was less shy but still cautious.

At the pool the two flirted with less trouble while sunbathing. Deborah still wasn't used to displaying affection publicly.

Damion reached over to hold her hand and she almost had panic attack. People didn't seem to care much about the two displaying affection. An older woman by the name of Agnes scolded the two for displaying such disgusting behavior but soon went to yell at some kids splashing in the pool. ---

Bella had come up with her 'diagnosis', "You're just to shy."

Deborah thought about it for a moment and replied, "Maybe I am."

"Just try and be less worried and be more open."

"Thanks Bella, I knew I could count on you."

"No problem hon, I've got to go now, I'm having dinner with Mortimer's parents soon."

The other end soon became silent a click was heard. Deborah sighed as put up the phone.

Maybe Bella is right. I'm too shy but, I really am committed to this relationship. I wonder, is Damion?
