Alfred Vulner was born in 2002 to Penny and Darren Vulner, two upper-middle-class adults from both very good backgrounds. Alfred went to a school at which his father governed. Alfred had an older sister, Melanie.
Melanie Vulner disappeared while taking Alfie out one day. Melanie was told by a family friend that her family had died in a car crash, and she needed to live with her. Melanie believed the family friend and went along with her. She had been kidnapped. Several years later, the Vulner's finally let go of Melanie, and moved away.
Charlie West met Alfie Vulner at school, and took a particular interest in him. Alfie Vulner impressed Charlie with his charm and spirit, the two began a relationship. Charlie showed Alfie off to Babe and Kevin. Babe was not impressed by Alfie's middle-class attitude. The West's were invited round to dinner with the Vulner's, at which Babe got incredibly drunk and began a fight.
