Yuri Kang
Biography
'The Elder Daughter of the Kang Family and the second of the 4 children.'
Yuri Kang, Born March 3, 1993 (in the Third Timeline), is one of the members of the Kang family, which is also the patriarchal family of the Koreans in the Third Timeline. Despite what that position may cause people to expect, Yuri is not known for a thirst for power. In fact, Yuri is against the idea of centralized power that is a byproduct of autocratic regimes. Yuri is also a fervent opponent of militarism, as well as one of the most fervent supporters of renewable energy. Yuri is quite well-versed in the fields of mechanical fields because of her dedication to ecologically sustainable technology, and thus is a prime figure scouted by the Ecclesiarchy.
Yuri has 9 points in Invention, 7 points in Handiness, and 3 points in Gardening at the initial point when starting a game in Hekatonschoinos.
Before the Greeks came, Yuri lived in the alternate Hekatonschoinos which was then called the Great Asian Crucible, rightfully so given the heated ethnic conflict between the three major East Asian ethnic groups. A pacifist, Yuri was one of the few to call for compromises and peace, but Taejong squelched Yuri's opinion vigorously, despite the fact that Taejong himself grew more weary of the ethnic conflict with passing days. Yuri was thus forced off the realm of politics, and Yuri spent the energy in learning the art of machine building and maintenance. By doing this, Yuri hoped to make a progress towards a more sustainable world in other directions.
Yuri's progress in the field was not unnoticed by Taejong, who was both proud of Yuri's capabilities and disappointed at her field of study, which seemed to him as unwomanly. However, Taejong was not too disappointed, given that he remembers Yuri's childhood in which she preferred assembling blocks over dolls. Yuri however was not alone in pursuing the art of machine building. Yuri sought some help initially online, and met up with Eunjin, who was the daughter of Bongjun, who was a close friend of Taejong. Both Bongjun and Taejong approved of a bond between the two, despite their reservation regarding the daughters' field of study.
Eunjin had another secret: Eunjin was a Philhellene, and had forged an amiable relationship with the Greek butler in the Japanese ranks, Herakleitos. With the arrival of the Greeks, the arrivals took greatest interest initially in the Japanese. However, Herakleitos himself didn't give much concerns about the arrivals, and Eunjin swept the attention of the arrivals. Eunjin was also eager to introduce Yuri to the group, who was already interested in Eunjin's work with the machine as well as her interest in their culture. Yuri was extremely appealing to the Greek newcomers as Yuri's grasp of technical fields was way above average. Given Yuri's fervent pursuit of her goal (which was to make for technology that is sustainable from resource usage to waste), the Greeks soon started to scout her hoping to recruit Yuri very eagerly. In fact, Kallisto insisted on the coming of the Kang family simply because of their eagerness to take Yuri into the fold, and as a resident of the Second Timeline Hekatonschoinos, Yuri has to constantly deal with appeals from the Ecclesiarchy, coming in forms such as muster invites, special favors, and other benefits.
Despite the hassles that the Ecclesiarchy frequently causes, Yuri is well-mannered: Yuri has not once declined a muster, and also invited Ecclesiarchy members over. Yuri is also one of the most vocal inputs to Ecclesiarchal initiatives, often arguing for a focus on sustainable economic technologies rather than military technologies. Yuri continues to focus on renewable energy, something that Kallisto supports not because of any ecological impacts but simply due to such products enabling them to reduce energy dependency.
Yuri is also a supporter of both the welfare state and private charity, an unusual stance. Yuri is one of the few that notices the Ecclesiarchal aid to other households, and has supported aid to indebted families. She is disappointed that such robust social netting doesn't apply to pets given the lack of Ecclesiarchal actions to contain the pet plague, although Yuri hasn't taken major actions given the enormous cost that would be accrued by a project of such scale, nor did Yuri appeal to local politicians or hold a fundraiser.
Yuri is far less successful in gardening than Kallisto expected given the ever so frequent migrations, although the Kang family's decision to stay at the newly built Ziggurat Palace hasn't done a thing to remedy Yuri's lack of progress with the garden. In fact, this has been brought to light in face of a newcomer who shows initiative to the level that was only seen in say the beginning days of the Greek supersims such as Stratonike and Kallisto, taking full advantage of the abundant resources of the Papal State in direct contrast to Yuri who had been rather reluctant in doing so. Despite this, Yuri still proves a better mechanic than the newcomer, and Yuri has grown more active in inventing.
Yuri is a homage to the former K-pop group member turned actress Sung Yu-ri. Yuri is born on March 3, 1993 in the Time Paradox timeline, which is compared to the said real-life figure's birthday of March 3, 1981. Yuri is also flat chested for maximum win, and the IRL figure has been also implied to be that way.
Politically, Yuri leans to the left, as well as to the anti-authoritarian side, and as such Yuri's political position is most in line with that of Dalai Lama, only more to the left and anti-authoritarian. (Left/Right -5.88, Authoritarian/Anti-Authoritarian -4.46, compared to Kallisto's -6.00/0.67)
Yuri is a member of the Tech Nerd Trine, alongside Kyriake Kostopoulou and Eun Jin Choi. Yuri is particularly comparable to Kyriake: Yuri having familial support despite the lack of familial uses for her tech know-hows, while Kyriake lacking familial support to pursue the skill despite familial usage of Kyriake's know-hows. Interestingly, all three of them are of the Water signs.
