She possesses a masculine body frame, but she can also get pregnant; this suggests she may be intersex or non-binary. Her customised gender may be a reference to the third gender, māhū, in Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures, which are cultures that Sulani is based on.

Lia and Keala are connected on the family tree. Keala shows up as Lia's grandmother and vice versa. However, the parent relationship linking Lia and Keala is left blank.
