Three children having a water balloon fight.

Sims and pets can play with each other without the use of additional objects in The Sims series. Some activities require a certain relationship score to become available. Playing always requires at least two Sims and will boost both the fun and social motives.

The Sims 2[edit | edit source]

Sims of all ages can play with each other, although Sims will reject most play interactions or be unavailable until they have developed a good enough relationship with the initiating Sim. In addition, some play interactions are only available for children and toddlers. Most activities will only grant a moderate boost to relationship when the interaction ends, although some activities will provide a steady, continuous boost to relationship. Sims will typically stop playing when their fun meters are full, or if their other motives drop too low.

  • Cops N Robbers: Can only be done between children. Sims will run around the room they're in and pretend to have shootouts and duels with finger guns.
  • Kicky Bag: Sims will produce a bean bag and pass it between each other with their feet, continuing until one Sim lets the bag touch the ground. Sims with a higher body skill are better able to keep the bag in the air. Multiple Sims can join in this activity depending on the amount of space available, and other Sims can spectate. Children cannot play kicky bag nor join in an existing kicky bag game.
  • Mary Mack: Can only be done between children. Sims will sit down and play a singing-clapping game, similar to Concentration 64.
  • Pillow Fight: Sims will have a playful pillow fight with each other. When a pillow hits a Sim, visible feathers will fly, although they do not have to be cleaned up. Sims will play in one location for a period of time before chasing each other around the room to continue the fight in a new location.
  • Play Catch: Sims will pass a baseball back and forth between each other from a distance. Sims with a higher body skill are less likely to drop the ball when catching. If a Sim with a high body skill is playing with a Sim that has a significantly lower body skill, they may throw the ball very hard at them, causing them to drop it.
  • Punch U - Punch Me: Sims will take turns punching each other in the upper arm until one Sim rubs their arm in pain or after a random number of punches, after which they will switch places. Sims with a higher body skill are able to take and deliver stronger punches. If a Sim with a high body skill is playing with a Sim that has a significantly lower body skill, they may deliver a very strong punch to the arm.
  • Red Hands: Sims will play red hands and attempt to slap the other Sim's hands before they can pull them away.
  • Rock, Paper, Scissors: Sims will play stone, paper, scissors with each other. If a Sim wins, they will gain one relationship point with the loser, while the losing Sim loses a relationship point with the winner. If both Sims tie, both Sims will gain a relationship point.
  • Show Off: Can only be done by child Sims to other children, or to older Sims. Sims can choose to demonstrate a headstand, a cartwheel, or a somersault. If the other Sim has a positive relationship with the initiating Sim, they will cheer and the stunt will be successful; otherwise, they will boo, and the initiating Sim will stumble and fail the stunt.
  • Snowball Fight:[TS2:S] Similar to having a water balloon fight. Can only be done in the winter and when there is snow on the ground.
  • Swing Around:[TS2:AL] Requires a child and a teen or older Sim. The older Sim will pick up the child by their hands and then swing them around themselves.
  • Tag: Can only be done between children. Sims will run around the room they're in and play a game of tag.
  • Tease: Can only be done by children to toddlers. The child will wave a toy in front of the toddler's face and sneer at them.
  • Tickle: One Sim will attempt to tickle the other Sim in numerous places. Toddlers cannot tickle other Sims, but they can be tickled by any older Sim.
  • Toss Football: Similar to playing catch, except Sims will use a pigskin football instead of a baseball.
  • Toss in Air: Can only be done by teens and older to toddlers. The older Sim will toss the toddler up into the air playfully. Occasionally, the toddler may vomit on the older Sim; this will not harm their relationship, although it will lower the older Sim's hygiene.
  • Water Balloon Fight: Sims will find a large, empty spot outdoors and throw water balloons at each other. Multiple Sims can join in this activity depending on the amount of space available, and no water puddles will form as a result. If Seasons is installed, having a water balloon fight will greatly lower the temperatures of the participants.

Toddlers can also be played with by older Sims. They can be tickled, play peek-a-boo or, just like with babies - tossed in the air.

Babies will also have a separate "Play With" interaction available to them, where Sims can cuddle the baby and give it an "Eskimo kiss". Like toddlers, babies can vomit on the Sim if they are played with. Only teens and older can play with a baby.

Pets[edit | edit source]

Sims can play with dogs and cats as well. Much like other Sims, pets may reject the interaction if they have a poor relationship with the initiating Sim, or if they are in a bad mood. Pets may also autonomously ask to be played with.

Interactions available for dogs:

  • Razzle: Sims will tease the dog by waving their hands around its head.
  • Fetch: Sims will toss a stick for the dog to bring back. Sims may occasionally tease the dog by pretending to throw the stick and hiding it behind their back.

Interactions available for cats:

  • Cat Teaser: Sims will produce a feather duster and tease the cat with it.
  • Toss in Air: Sims will pick up the cat and toss it playfully into the air. Cats may occasionally vomit after being played with this way.
  • Finger Wiggle: Sims will wiggle their finger in front of the cat and try to get it to scratch it. Occasionally, Sims will get cut while playing, which will cause a slight decrease in relationship[confirmation needed].
  • Play With: Can only be done to kittens. Sims will either tickle and poke the pet with their hand or toss them in the air.

The Sims 3[edit | edit source]

Unlike The Sims 2, there aren't a lot of play-related interactions available between Sims. Children and Sims with the childish can play tag with one another. The Sims 3: Supernatural expansion pack adds a new "rock, paper, scissors" social interaction, which a Sim can play with another. Many recreational games require an object (such as baseball for catch) to be present on the lot or in a Sim's inventory to be played.
