Number of Traits[edit source]

Heh. So, I just got done numbering Gamespot's "full and complete list of the 65 traits in The Sims 3 for you to look over." 1=absent-minded 2=ambitious 3=angler 4=artistic 5=athletic 6=bookworm 7=brave 8=can't stand art 9=charismatic 10=childish 11=clumsy 12=commitment issues 13=computer whiz 14=couch potato 15=coward 16=daredevil 17=dislikes children 18=easily impressed 19=evil 20=excitable 21=family-oriented 22=flirty 23=friendly 24=frugal 25=genius 26=good 27=good sense of humor 28=great kisser 29=green thumb 30=grumpy 31=handy 32=hates the outdoors 33=heavy sleeper 34=hopeless romantic 35=hot-headed 36=hydrophobic 37=inappropriate 38=insane 39=kleptomaniac 40=light sleeper 41=loner 42=loser 43=loves the outdoors 44=lucky 45=mean spirited 46=mooch 47=natural cook 48=neat 49=neurotic 50=never nude 51=no sense of humor 52=over-emotional 53=party animal 54=perfectionist 55=schmoozer 56=slob 57=snob 58=technophobe 59=unflirty 60=unlucky 61=vegetarian 62=virtuoso 63=workaholic. Sorry I didn't get around to formatting it, but you might notice a number mismatch. Did they miss two traits, or miscount the number? Or was it just "meh, let's round to the nearest five. Nobody'd be crazy enough to number the list!" Or did I just plain screw up somewhere along the line? (I double-checked enough to convince myself it's not the last one.) 141.224.224.191 23:06, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

I get 63 from GameSpot's list as well. Our list also has Conversationalist, Materialistic, Paranoid, Pizza Lover, Stubborn and Vain, but I don't know where they came from. --a_morris (talk) 23:36, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
In my opinion it's not imoprtant to list the number of traits since it's gonna be hell to update everytime a new expansion comes out so I think we should leave it out. Duskey 18:00, June 9, 2010 (UTC)
I added hidden counts of the traits in the new arrange of trait down below. With WA and Ambitions, I count 72 traits (hidden traits excluded). Duskey 07:53, June 13, 2010 (UTC)

Similar Traits[edit source]

Although there appears to be a problem with the number of Traits on what GameSpot calls a full and complete list of traits, I wanted to get everyone's opinion of what might not be a trait.

Traits on our list that are not on GameSpot's:

  • Conversationalist
  • Materialistic
  • Paranoid
  • Pizza Lover
  • Stubborn
  • Vain

I believe that these traits are duplicates of other traits

  • Conversationalist = Charismatic
  • Materialistic = Snob

--a_morris (talk) 00:14, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

I feel fairly confident in saying Pizza Lover was a preference (e.g. Favorite Food: Pizza) misinterpreted as a trait. 141.224.224.191 05:15, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

I swear i heard materialistic in one of the sims 3 videos! or maybe it was artistic? i could b mistaken :S Matta jr 21:52, 5 April 2009 (UTC) Yes deffo! Materialistic is in the sims 3 video with Herman and Arnie! Still though they may have got rid of it. But just in case we should leave it be(for now). o and also Convesationalist is in the video :) Matta jr 21:59, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Pyromaniac[edit source]

I've had a couple sims make children with a Firefighter NPC, including one who was a single mom to make sure it didn't have something to do with the firefighter being controllable or not. But never was Pyromaniac available to choose from for Traits when I was able to choose. Was this feature cut?--Fresherfinch 23:04, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

I've been wondering this myself. Maybe it's a random trait, like when you don't keep the mood meter at maximum? Anyone confirm? —ErzengelLichtes (Contribs) 21:26, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

OK, I just used a mod to access the hidden traits. In Create-A-Sim, most of them have a description, but a couple basically have placeholder (pyro being one of them). However, when you create the sim with the hidden trait and go into game, the traits have empty descriptions. Even those that have description in CAS. This really makes me think that it is a cut feature. Of course, I could be wrong.—ErzengelLichtes (Contribs) 02:34, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Well but I've had a woman sim make children with a burglar, it didn't had the burglar trait as it should, but when this sim grew up to an young adult, I clicked on the floor by mistake and there was an option that was sneak here, the same with her brother, that is son of a firefighter and my sim, I click on him and had the option set something on fire and it did so. Maybe those traits are not able to chose in the list, but maybe they're hidden in the sims? --190.200.14.1 15:20, September 1, 2009 (UTC)\

PyroManiac is a Hidden trait so you can have the five plus the un-shown pyro trait.

Pimped article[edit source]

Hey chaps, just added a load of stuff I've researched from my own gameplay and from the Prima guide. Hope this is all ok, this is my first edit and not sure if I'm going to be trampling all over someone's toes.

A couple of points about my edit:

- Things added from Prima guide are all re-worded and I've verified 99.9% of the stuff in my own game.

- I've changed some of the game's trait descriptions slightly, I found some of them a bit strangely worded, and I thought some of the points could do with a bit of clarification.

- I removed a lot of the exclamaction marks from the end of each sentence, it made for awkward reading.

So;

- I'm not sure if the '(taken from the game where possible)' phrase needs to be removed from the beginning of the article

- I don't know how I feel about most of the points beginning with 'Your Sim...', anyone have an opinion?

- I want to stick in a LOT more internal links to things such as moodlets and skills etc. Thoughts?

- Finally, I'm a bit pissed and not sure if I've missed any spelling or grammar errors so please feel free to correct!

Whew. My wrists.

Maybe we could add the ingame icons for all the traits 83.161.230.43 20:27, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Relationship to Lifetime Wishes[edit source]

Maybe we could add in what lifetime wishes appear and how often they appear from each trait. Likewise, a list of which traits grant a particular lifetime wish in List of Lifetime wishes page. For example: the lifetime wish "The Perfect Garden" will appear very often with the "Green Thumb" and "Perfectionist" traits. Having both will make that wish appear almost all the time. Both the "Genius" and "Workaholic" traits can make the lifetime wish "Renaissance Sim" appear, but the "Workaholic" trait will make it appear more often than the "Genius" trait.

Hopefully, someone can find the XML file that governs this. 70.23.4.111 03:14, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Added some stuff. Mainly examples of pre-made Sims with certain traits. --Shirviu 20:20, January 2, 2010 (UTC)

what do you think the removed traits would be like[edit source]

i believe nude sims are AWLWAYS naked wanton sims will get 10 wants every second why dont you add what you think Xxgreenbunnyxx

Unlucky Guy and Grim[edit source]

Asian Culture[edit source]

Bella Goth - My hobbies include organ practice and gardening of the lethal variety.
TALK - Have you seen my family?
I had a CAS American girl marry the General Goods merchant from China. However, he didn't have the Asian culture trait. Will their children have the trait? And if not, is there a cheat or something that will give my the Asian trait?

Kiwi_tea - n00b.
TALK - I am the Walrus
It depends. As far as I can tell only premade EA Sims have the Asian Culture trait, and they pass it to their children, but new residents generated in the destinations don't seem to have it (certainly not always). If you'd been running the neighbourhood for a long time, the the Asian Culture trait might have been bred right out of China. At any rate, if your Sim doesn't have it, they won't be passing it on.

Ambitions[edit source]

In ambitions, if you create a firefighter will their children have a chance of getting the pyro or immune to fire traits? Or does it only count for NPC firefighters? Thanks, Guffers 12:58, June 2, 2010 (UTC)

I haven't tried this myself yet, but at some point in the firefighter career it says that you can pass your firefighting gene on to your offspring now, so it might be that you need to hit that step to be able to get it now. I believe it was rank 8. Duskey 18:03, June 12, 2010 (UTC)

New arrangement of traits[edit source]

I think this list of traits needs an overhaul. I was thinking a table at the top with the trait categories in the rows (mental, social etc.) and the expansions they came in as columns. Every trait in this table index go into their two categories. See below for an example.
Each trait should also be a title so it can be linked to directly from other articles and from this top table.

The new trait index has been moved to Trait (The Sims 3).

Any thoughts are welcome. Duskey 09:36, June 10, 2010 (UTC)

That's a good idea, similar to the Skill article. If we give each trait its own page I would suggest moving the table to Trait (The Sims 3) and keep this page as an alphabetical list only with no descriptions. --a_morris (talk) 18:04, June 10, 2010 (UTC)
Maybe instead of the icon of the game on the left column, why not just break it up into sections? (as in, them ==Game version/name/expansion pack...thing== sections)--Reimi~ 21:10, June 10, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, the skill table is sort of similar. Each trait should, in my opinion, have its own page so it can be discussed and everything the trait unlocks or enables can be added. If we do that, then I'd suggest that we only show the ingame short description of the trait on the lists. On each individual trait page we then list the detailed description also from ingame (when you actually have a sim with the trait) and differ it from what that actually means. At the moment the ingame description is mixed with user comments and observations. I'm not sure what you're suggesting Reimi. Duskey 23:57, June 10, 2010 (UTC)
I think what Reimi is suggesting is that traits from different expansion packs be in separate tables. --a_morris (talk) 03:06, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
I think if 70-some new pages are going to be created (one for each trait), it should be discussed community-wide. I can see positives and negatives to both. LostInRiverview 00:04, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
LostInReiverview, I don't see the negatives you see. Could you expand on that? --a_morris (talk) 03:06, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
I just don't see enough material being available for each trait to warrant giving each trait its own page. Would it be possible to see an example of how this would be implemented, perhaps in the Sandbox? LostInRiverview 03:19, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
You mean an example of a single trait page? (I added artistic to the table above to illustrate my point about a new index better) Duskey 12:56, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
The Sims Wiki:Sandbox/Artistic --a_morris (talk) 21:55, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
That looks pretty good. I withdraw my hesitation. LostInRiverview 22:01, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
My only other question, one that has no bearing on my opinion of this idea; is there is some way, on the individual trait page, to link to the category list of Sims that have that trait? LostInRiverview 22:16, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
Absolutely. I didn't add any categories as it was a test page, but I would categorize all the trait pages in one category and individual pages could be linked and added to a specific Sims by Traits category. --a_morris (talk) 22:22, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
Well I think this is all a good idea. If you need an an extra hand in creating the articles or whatever, give me a shout on my talk page. LostInRiverview 22:52, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
I think we need all the hands we can get. I finished the table up above, does it miss anything? Is there a way we can make it better? Duskey 17:59, June 12, 2010 (UTC)
Also, maybe we should add the new ambitions traits first so people can start using the talk pages, I'm sure they're more exciting these days. I'm still abit oblivious as to what Reimi was talking about earlier. If we go ahead and implement the above table in the list of traits (and get all traits into their own pages) do we ditch the alphabetic TOC? With these two changes in mind people can either search this wiki directly or use their browser to search the table above to find a trait, I don't see a real need for a specific alphabet listing. Duskey 20:29, June 12, 2010 (UTC)
I fiddled with the table again and made trait counters. Too much? Duskey 08:45, June 13, 2010 (UTC)

Finalizing[edit source]

Alright, all traits are now on their own pages. The table is as good as it's gonna get this time around (unless anyone has some feedback). I suggest we move the table to the List of Traits, delete the old info there, BUT keep the alphabetic sorting of trait names with Main article link to each individual trait page. There's alot of pages linking to letters on the list of traits and they should be sorted before we delete the old info completely. There's still the matter of hidden and dropped traits, should they stay at the bottom of the list? | Duskey | 17:09, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

I have moved the table to Trait (The Sims 3). --a_morris (talk) 20:14, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

Progress on Traits[edit source]

Right now, there are 20 pages in the Traits Category. They are: Absent-Minded, Adventurous, Ambitious, Angler, Artistic, Athletic (trait), Can't Stand Art, Commitment Issues, Couch Potato, Dramatic, Eccentric, Eco-Friendly, Evil, Flirty, Kleptomaniac, Loser, Technophobe, Unflirty, Unlucky, Vegetarian, Virtuoso, Workaholic

Some trait pages are redirects to the list (they can be found by going to the 'what links here' page for List of Traits), and those traits are what I am going to work on next, to get those out of the way. Plus, after that, we can simply use the red links to determine which pages still need to be made. LostInRiverview 23:14, June 12, 2010 (UTC)

Good work. Are you done reconfubeling all the old redirect traits? Also instead of listing example of sims with this trait, is it possible to just link to the category? How do you link to a category? Duskey 05:49, June 13, 2010 (UTC)
No, I haven't finished "reconfubeling" yet... I got a bit distracted, it happens. I wish I knew how to link to a category, but alas I do not. The only trick I can think is to create an article that has a redirect to a category, but I don't know any other way... I'll get back to reconfubeling - I think we should keep that word :) LostInRiverview 05:53, June 13, 2010 (UTC)
To the best of my knowledge, reconfubeling has been completed. From what I can tell, no trait pages now redirect to this page. How are the Ambitions traits coming along? LostInRiverview 07:17, June 13, 2010 (UTC)
Just finished with Ambitions traits. I think we should probably talk about a standard procedure of titles on trait pages. I added "perks" to some of them for copying the ingame tooltip, but as you (LostInRiverview) pointed out, the wording could be better. It just needs to be clear that its from the game and not something observed by the player. Duskey 07:30, June 13, 2010 (UTC)

Umm... are we done? There are no more red links up on that table... If so, what's the next step? LostInRiverview 06:05, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

Next step would be to make sure we caught all the redirects (I'm on it). I'd like some others to comment on the table before we move it to the List of Traits page. Also before that, check the history to see if there's info that has been added while we've been creating individual pages for the traits before we delete it. Finally when all that is done, a little heads up! to the community would be nice since they might wonder where their traits went. | Duskey | 06:32, June 14, 2010 (UTC)
All links in the table now function properly. | Duskey | 06:48, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

Standardization[edit source]

The following discussion has been copied to Category talk:Traits and The Sims Wiki talk:Project Simology/Manual of style (with a summary on The Sims Wiki:Project Simology/Manual of style) for future reference. --a_morris (talk) 20:23, June 14, 2010 (UTC)

I didn't want to continue that thread under that section (it can get quite long) so I started a new section.

As Duskey said above, there should be some standards for the Traits articles. Below is an example of the (rough) standard I've been using:

<Image> Trait A is a <mental, physical, social, lifestyle> trait in <game>. <It conflicts with <Trait B> and is available at <age> (if this information is not available or not known by me, I leave it blank)>

The in-game Trait description is here, italicized

<Heading - Behaviors (again, not the best wording>

  • List of Trait attributes
  • Most are taken from in-game text

<Heading - Related Skills (if applicable>

  • Skill (bolded if the skill is directly related to the moodlet)

<Heading - Possible Lifetime Wishes (if applicable>

  • Most of these are a stab in the dark

<Heading -Sims with Trait A>

Examples of <Trait A possessing> Sims: List of example Sims, linked to their articles.

I've also been inserting, between the lifetime wish and example sims, a list of 1 or 2 related traits, though only in the last few articles I've made (Green Thumb, Loves The Outdoors).

I've added each article to two categories... the first is the Traits category, the second is the category corresponding to the trait, example "Sims with Green Thumbs" or "Snobs".

So...what do we want to adopt as a standard? LostInRiverview 07:39, June 13, 2010 (UTC)

Yes! Attributes that's the word we can use for the ingame text. I noticed A morris added "Unlocked interaction" to some traits which I like. I'm also quite prone to adding "Player notes" or something along those lines, though we could call that "Behaviours". Duskey 07:45, June 13, 2010 (UTC)
Agreed, I think 'Attributes' is a good word for both situations. The reason I've avoided using "unlocked interaction" is because it's sometimes hard to classify what is an interaction... maybe I'm splitting hairs. I like the idea of Player Notes - it can be put in when a player has a comment that wasn't part of the original in-game text. I'm going to buzz through the articles and change 'Behavior' to 'Attributes' where it exists. LostInRiverview 07:50, June 13, 2010 (UTC)
It's getting late where I live and I am quite honestly a little sick of typing the word 'attribute'. I'm calling it a night. You can either finish the job or just wait for me to do it (or another user). Otherwise, after that, the next logical step is to create pages for the remaining redlinked traits. Ooh, fun! LostInRiverview 08:18, June 13, 2010 (UTC)
Don't wear yourself out. A wiki didn't build itself overnight. I see you removed the your from my your sims is better at... in attributes. Ingame it actually starts with Your sim... every time. Duskey 08:49, June 13, 2010 (UTC)
As far as anyone knows, are there any other pages that need to be made besides those red link pages above? LostInRiverview 04:24, June 14, 2010 (UTC)
