Forum: Player Theories[edit source]

Doesn't someone need to add this, to the forums list on the main page. Joey.eyeball (talk) 19:59, November 15, 2013 (UTC)

Very true. Since you noticed it, feel free to add it to the template. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 20:30, November 15, 2013 (UTC)
The comment for it may need editing, but its there! Joey.eyeball (talk) 20:53, November 15, 2013 (UTC)

Changes to Main Page due to fluid layout[edit source]

As I mentioned here, this section is intended to discuss individual changes we might need to make to the main page in order to prepare for the roll-out of fluid layouts.

First, there's the issue of the right column. The column width is shrinking from 330px to 300px. So, we'll need to make sure all our current content displays correctly at that new smaller width. The left column (the main section of the page) will no longer have a fixed width, but will vary depending on the display resolution of the reader's monitor or browser window. The right column width remains at a static 300px, but if the main page is viewed with a lower resolution display (such as one found on a tablet), the right column is actually moved below the left column. This is a problem, considering we have some important information and links currently in the right column, such as the Wiki's 'About us' section.

Another matter to consider is the main page's slider gallery. The width of images used in the gallery is and will remain fixed at 670 px wide. On larger displays, this will create a very large area of empty space on either side of the slider image. Unfortunately there is no way to fix this presently, so it might be worth considering removing the slider image gallery altogether.

That's all I've got right now -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 04:54, November 19, 2013 (UTC)

Battles[edit source]

TSP on the main page[edit source]

I feel that The Sim's Pen as it is right now, just being on the Fanon Portal, it isn't getting as much attention as I'd like. The Fanon section seems to be dying out just as quickly as before TSP was introduced. I think it would be a good idea to take one step further and try putting TSP on the main page in the fanon section alongside the other two news lists. ―WikiBuilder1147 (Infinite HistoriesGalactic CruciblesThe Sims WikiHallows MaleficentWhy I'm here in the first place) 12:12, September 7, 2014 (UTC)

I kinda agree, but I suggest we discuss this matter over community discussion forum. Nikel Talk Vote! 15:06, September 7, 2014 (UTC)

Main page redesign[edit source]

The discussion has been dead for a little while now, but I'd like to bring it up again. Recently I took the liberty of creating an alternative design for the main page, which reorganises the features on the page based on their function, for example "Forums", "News", etc. This design also has the benefit of having the ability to facilitate the presence of The Sim's Pen adequately. I furthermore believe that this new design looks much more unique to TSW, as the headings have a special, Sims-themed font. I'd appreciate it if this issue comes to a definitive conclusion through this thread. You can view the design as a whole here, and the individual components of the design here. ―The Tim Man (Infinite HistoriesGalactic CruciblesThe Sims WikiHallows MaleficentWhy I'm here in the first place) 11:17, September 29, 2014 (UTC)

The "Welcome to The Sims Wiki" banner looks really, really childish IMO. Could this be tweaked before we are mistaken for the Barney & Friends Wiki? :P --I am k6ka Talk to me! See what I have done 11:24, September 29, 2014 (UTC)
I've straightened out the letters. Is it more to your liking now? ―The Tim Man (Infinite HistoriesGalactic CruciblesThe Sims WikiHallows MaleficentWhy I'm here in the first place) 11:48, September 29, 2014 (UTC)
Hmm... I think it was the blue background too! --I am k6ka Talk to me! See what I have done 11:53, September 29, 2014 (UTC)
Much better :3 . Now we just need input from other members of the community. --I am k6ka Talk to me! See what I have done 13:54, September 29, 2014 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── I edited the wiki main page to incorporate this proposed design, and then reverted that edit. So, we now have a version of the page which displays everything at the correct width - see here.

Now, my own personal take on the design:

Pros
  • Good balance: The length of the right and left columns is very close; when considering that non-registered users will also see an advertisement in the right column, the balance is pretty much spot on.
  • Can accommodate future additions: the width of the modules right now means additional modules could be added without seriously disrupting the overall flow of the page. For instance, if we were to adopt a new feature, we could easily reduce the width on the Featured Article module to accommodate it.
Cons
  • Font: I'm not sold on the new header fonts; they just seem too childish. If we're looking for a unique font, why not just use the same font that we use for the wiki logo? The downside to that is that you'd either have to re-create the font or find someone else who already has, but I think it would ultimately look much better than the one being used. But, if it were a choice between using the new header fonts and using the old fonts, I'd choose the old one.
  • Top banner: I personally really like the large blue banner that exists at the top of the current main page. While I'm not saying it needs to be recreated on the new page, I think there should be something in its place. If nothing else, the particular header used there should at the very least be a larger size than the headers further down the page.
  • Spacing: This is a minor issue, but I don't like the large gaps between the different sections.

As a final note, I think the forums module needs to be redone. The reason I didn't list this under cons is because it's just copying what we already have. So my complaint is that our current Forums module sucks. I'd love to see an idea on how to change it, because I don't like what we have now.

In any case, those are my §0.02 - LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 14:28, September 29, 2014 (UTC)

Just a tip - you can also use the HideRail script to optionally hide the annoying Wikia rail on the right, which should make editing the main page in a user sandbox a bit easier. --I am k6ka Talk to me! See what I have done 21:19, September 29, 2014 (UTC)

I have made revisions to the design as per LiR's (extremely helful :)) feedback. How does it look now? ―The Tim Man (Infinite HistoriesGalactic CruciblesThe Sims WikiHallows MaleficentWhy I'm here in the first place) 03:56, September 30, 2014 (UTC)

TBH I'm still not sold on the font choice. I know I personally would prefer to just stick with a standard font. If nothing else, the font color should be made to match the green and blue used in the header bars. For the text within the banner, white lettering would work best. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 04:27, September 30, 2014 (UTC)
So, I'm looking at {{forumsinterface}} and I've got to say, I'm very impressed. Is it possible, though, to have a text description next to each image? The reason I mention this is that the images themselves don't make it obvious what they're linked to, and people might not think to hover over the images to see the link or the popup text. I think you could have words on either side of the circle, three on the left and three on the right. In any event, it's better than the current design. I'm also not sure if it might warrant being moved to the right margin instead, since it now appears narrower. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 06:24, September 30, 2014 (UTC)
I like to see the new main page will look like, but I think it is a good idea to move this in the new forum page. If everyone is agree for that. ~~.ThePeculiarMe | (talk to me) | (my mistakes) 12:49, October 2, 2014 (UTC)
Just saying that polls aren't really a good way to obtain input on something, since polls can be manipulated, whereas the page history doesn't lie. In fact, the help page for polls discourage use of polls for important purposes. --I am k6ka Talk to me! See what I have done 13:52, October 2, 2014 (UTC)

The Sims 4 on the Home Page[edit source]

As you all know, The Sims 3 wallpaper is on the Home Page. Since The Sims 4 is out and The Sims Wiki logo has been changed to TS4 font, we should add TS4 wallpaper to the Home Page. Sorry, this page is for discussion of the Main Page, not for game issues. You'll want the Help desk instead. Secondly, this is an issue you will probably need to contact EA about, since we cannot provide you with things like serial keys and codes. --I am k6ka Talk to me! Page protection[edit source]

Unless you want vandalism, protect the page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tiddles the Ocelot (talkcontribs) 16:59, April 19, 2015 (UTC) - Please sign your comments with ~~~~

The page is semi-protected and fully move-protected. There hasn't been any vandalism to the main page in a year, and even if it occurs it is easily corrected. - LostInRiverview talkblogcontribs 17:08, April 19, 2015 (UTC)

Reinstatement of Events section[edit source]

I was thinking, maybe we could put the Events section back in, next to The Sims News? It's in a nice, central location, and it won't interfere with any other elements of the existing layout. —The Tim Man (IHGCTSWAHContribs) 11:10, June 16, 2015 (UTC)

It was removed since it caused issues with the right sidebar protruding below the main page with advertisements enabled. I don't notice it since I have AdBlock, but not everyone does. --I am k6ka Talk to me! See what I have done 11:17, June 16, 2015 (UTC)
Yes, but what I'm proposing is placing it not on the right sidebar, but in the main space, next to The Sims News. That way it won't cause the sidebar to protrude. —The Tim Man (IHGCTSWAHContribs) 11:19, June 16, 2015 (UTC)
If Events is added back in, it should be in the right column. Adding it to the left column (main column) would require us splitting that column into two columns, which displays very poorly on mobile devices. Case in point: Check out Featured Editor and Featured Media on the main page on your mobile device (or use the mobile preview option). I should add that I absolutely detest the way the wiki is displayed on mobile, but it seems as though Wikia, for once, might actually be correct in saying that we get ~50% of web traffic from mobile devices, so we should at least attempt to improve their reading experience. - LostInRiverview talkblogcontribs 14:02, June 16, 2015 (UTC)
