Page(s) for deletion: Category:Sims named after real people

Any member of the wiki may participate in a deletion discussion. Comments during discussion should focus on why the article should or should not be deleted, merged, or modified. Users should explain their reasoning sufficiently. Deletion discussions are not votes; strength of argument matters more than the number of people in favor or opposed to deletion.

Nomination[edit source]

This is a duplicate category of one that already exists. Ѧüя◎ґ (talk) 17:31, May 20, 2018 (UTC)

Discussion[edit source]

I don't know if this is how the categories are used, but you could argue that "named after real people" and "based on real people" don't mean the same thing. You could make a Sim that resembles and has the same characteristics as a real-life person, but give that Sim a completely different name, or you could create a Sim with the same name as a real-life person but give them differing characteristics. Like I said, I don't know how the categories are actually used in practice, but I don't know that the two are mutually inclusive. -- LostInRiverview talk · blog · contribs 17:37, May 20, 2018 (UTC)
Wouldn't it seem that all Sims "named after real people" are also "based on real people"? For instance we don't know what Julius Caesar looked like exactly in real life, yet the Sim version of him is definitely both named and based on the real person. Of course, the difference between "named after" and "based on" would need to be defined first. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 19:08, May 20, 2018 (UTC)
I strongly oppose because of the reasons stated by lost in Riverview. Cheseburgermac (talk) 09:59, May 23, 2018 (UTC)
I support deletion. I agree with K6ka's response above and think that so far every page in the "named after real people"-category might as well be in the "based on real people"-category. Differentiating between these two feels a bit too nitpicky in my eyes. - KailynnKat(talk/fanon) 02:06, July 27, 2018 (UTC)
By the very nature of the words, "named after" and "based on" don't necessarily mean the same thing. If you made a Sim and named him Albert Einstein, but the Sim you created didn't have any of the personality or physical characteristics of the real-life Einstein, you could say that your creation was named after Einstein, but you could not say that such a character was based on him. Conversely, you could create a character that has very close appearance, mannerisms and personality to an existing person, but not give them that real-life person's name (usually this would be an homage, so likely the name you'd use would reference the real-life name - this has happened quite a bit, where Sims are created as deliberate homages to fictional characters). In this example, that Sim could be said to be based on a real-life person, but not be named after them. The two categories are not synonymous. That said, I'd guess that the potential overlap of the two categories would be significant, because in reality, if you're going through the trouble of naming a Sim after someone, you're probably also creating them to (at least somewhat) resemble them physically and in terms of personality. So you could say that a Sim is both named after and based on a real-life person, but this is needlessly redundant. For the sake of simplicity, I'd support getting rid of the "Sims named after real people" category, and simply lump those examples into the broader "Sims based on real people" category. -- LostInRiverview talk · blog · contribs 00:35, February 15, 2019 (UTC)
You make great points I didn't consider when nominating this category for deletion. I now oppose deleting this category. Ѧüя◎ґ (talk) 03:08, May 30, 2019 (UTC)
Some important notes to point out (as explained by LiR):
  • "named after" and "based on" mean different things, but it's highly possible that a Sim named after a real person is also based on that person.
  • For simplicity's sake, it's better to lump Sims named after real people under Category:Sims based on real people, due to potential of redundancy.
  • In my opinion, even if a Sim is named after a real person i.e. Julius Caesar but not necessarily based on them, I say it's not necessary to categorize them separately.
Therefore, I support deletion of this category. Nikel Talk 04:13, June 30, 2020 (UTC)
