What is the reason for this?[edit source]

What is the reason for this? When wikia now has a chat feature? Sgt Frogman —Preceding undated comment added 20:42, April 6, 2012‎ (UTC) - Please sign your comments with ~~~~

I never use IRC, but the Chat has been disabled for this Wiki. AsherEire talk 20:44, April 6, 2012 (UTC)
Several reasons:
  1. IRC predates Chat by quite some time, roughly 1 year.
  2. Compared to IRC, Chat has very little functionality. Everyone is accustomed to IRC and it's not hard to get used to.
  3. I remember back when we had Chat, it was abused by one user the first day. We had to permanently block several of their accounts and it was tiresome - IRC we could just ban an IP address and then it's dealt with.
  4. Back when Chat was activated, noone ever used it. The community decided that it's not worth even having the feature if it's never going to be used. If you want to propose that it's reactivated then feel free to do so but I doubt you'll receive much support from the community, not to mention that Chat was actually deactivated not that long ago. Can't access proper IRC[edit source]

For some reason when I tried to get back into the IRC channel, it didn't take me to the main page. Instead an emptier page came up with all this rubbish:

This is the overflow channel for #wikia-sims, if you've ended up here then chances are the main channel is +r and you're not registered/identified with NickServ (see "/ns help register" or "/ns help identify" then try joining #wikia-sims ) or you've been banned for whatever reason. Please PM an admin to get in to #wikia-sims

Does anyone know why I'm having trouble accessing the "proper" page, and how long it may take until I am able to access it again? I don't mind not accessing it, but it's kinda frustrating knowing that I won't have access when I want to. -- C.Syde (talk | contribs) 00:51, September 29, 2014 (UTC)

You need to register in order to join the channel. Ѧüя◎ґ (talk) 01:06, September 29, 2014 (UTC)
Well, I have gotten in before, but I may need to confirm my registration to be able to fully access the channel all the time. -- C.Syde (talk | contribs) 01:12, September 29, 2014 (UTC)
The channel was set to +r mode today because of that repeat spammer. You'll need to register with nickserv until the channel is taken out of +r mode. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 01:14, September 29, 2014 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Registering on #wikia-sims was taken as an extreme measure to try and combat the load of immature 12-year-olds that target #wikia-sims for whatever reason. You must therefore register with NickServ before you can join the channel. When you connect, pick a nickname you want to use (if the nickname is already registered, NickServ will tell you that, and you will need to pick a different nickname - type /nick YOUR NEW NICKNAME HERE - e.g. /nick foo). Type /msg NickServ REGISTER <your username> <your password> to register a nickname (e.g. /msg NickServ REGISTER foo foo@bar.com). After that, you can log in to your nick by typing in /msg NickServ identify <your password>. You should also log in/identify with your nick occasionally - otherwise Freenode will drop your nick and someone else can claim it. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 01:16, September 29, 2014 (UTC)
Oh, okay, that explains it. -- C.Syde (talk | contribs) 01:17, September 29, 2014 (UTC)

The Sims Land IRC Channel[edit source]

Hello. I have created my own channel for The Sims as the existing Freenode channels on the game are either poor or empty. Come and join #The-Sims-Land where we can talk about The Sims all day long.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.180.0.34 (talkcontribs) 20:44, October 25, 2014 (UTC) - Please sign your comments with ~~~~

That's fine, and I wish you well with it, but this is not the place to promote it. Dharden (talk) 21:08, October 25, 2014 (UTC)
