Suggestions

I'm going to give you some suggestions about this wiki as we can make several improvements. So here they are:

• We should close the thread of "The Burn Wall". Even though those opinions are made anonymously, the negative ones are still considered as personal attacks. This is a collaborative site not a community site, so we shouldn't make opinions about any other contributors.
• I've been checking through the admin request page, and I've concluded that this wiki will be flooding in adminisrators. I suggest that you should reconsider they requests more complicated than before as some admins who were absent in the past few weeks have returned to this wiki. More importantly, you should close the admin request page when no more admins are required.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will consider taking action in the next few days. When I was first given the ability to give other admin rights I was told by Wikia's helper "the more admins, the better!", but you are not the first to suggest that there may be a limit or ratio between admins and regular editors. I will do some research on it and also check on which admins are still active. I was looking at a wikia a couple of days ago (Avatar wiki I think) and they have strict policies regarding how long an admin can be inactive before their adminship is revoked. I personally believe that administratorship should only be revoked if the admin has gotten banned for something major (vandalism, etc. minor would be if they didn't vandalize or be rude to another user, but got banned for something else) or if the admin is absent for 1 year & months +, and show no signs of returning to the wiki (i.e. by telling a fellow user on Facebook or something they'll never return to this wiki/Wikia in general). Once they do become active (not just editing 5 pages or something) their administratorship should be given back, because they (probably) worked hard for it! ^_^. Admins become admins for a reason. Whether that reason is that they are good editors, are kind to users, or both, there's is always a reason (or there should always be). Anyways, only staff could remove Bob Newbie is kl's administratorship because he's a bureaucrat, not just a sysop. I do agree with JAL's administratorship being removed, though, it hasn't been 1 year and 3 months since his latest edit. If he doesn't edit before one year and three months is over, I think his administratorship should be removed until he comes back and becomes active once again. Bob and Betty Newbie of console

Transparent logo

I asked Dharden if he/she (?) wanted a transparent logo, or that it has to be a white logo, because of the background. Dharden said that the logo was a non-issue for him/her (?), and that I should ask you. So, here goes:

Would you like to have a transparent logo or has it to be a white logo, because of the background (can be made more beautiful with #background_strip in Monaco.css)?

I can make the logo transparent, and I can upload it as File:Wiki-transparent, for example.

Two template suggestions

Hello, It's me pestering you again. I got some inspiration for two templates while browsing other wikias. They are basically simple message templates, but I wanted your opinion on their usefulness first. The first is basically just adding a warning to the top of the template page, stating that the template is still under development or undergoing testing and people should not use it. The other template is somewhat similar, but urges users to help out and provide feedback through the talk page. Appropriate categories would be added to the templates of course. That was actually my intention for the 2nd template I mentioned. I guess that was unclear. The purpose of the 1st one would be to stop people seeing it and thinking it's ok to use on pages. The 2nd is to let template-savvy people know that you wouldn't mind some feedback on it and also to make it easy to find said templates (through a category). Which reminds me, I've been meaning to ask you something, a morris. Do you mind if people respond to the more trivial matters on your talk page? This page seems quite busy and I easily understand if it gets overwhelming seeing as how you get messages on everything from how to edit an article to vandalism to expansion pack rumors and everything in between. It also appears you're the most active bureaucrat, so I personally see no harm in other users adding answers or clarifications to questions asked, even though it is YOUR talk page. Re: Affiliates

Yes, I had a similar idea. My idea what simply to put websites who link to us in an 'Affiliate' category in addition to 'Websites' and then have that displayed under The Sims Wiki:Affiliates, is that possible using transclusion? It would keep us from updating the list manually and only require us to re-post their microbanner when we add a new one. A banner AND a text list seem redundant if it can be handled by a category.

I'm not sure it'd work, but couldn't we use the 'includeonly' and 'noinclude' tags for the category? Something like this on Category:Affiliates so the normal category text would only show if you were actually on the category page and not on the affiliates page.

Tookute4m3

I gave this user a 1-week block for profanity and harassment after they'd already been blocked once for that. Given their attitude and track record, I doubt that they have any intention of becoming a constructive contributor, and am not sure that a week is long enough. Personally, I think they've earned a month, maybe even two, but I'm not sure about going directly from 3 days to one or two months. Dharden 21:42, July 11, 2010 (UTC)

I've been getting ... strange ... edits on my talk page from User:Iesha Parsons. They appear to be attempts to sow discord. Would it be out-of-bounds for me to remove them? Votes on redirects

I've noticed that redirect pages, retain their old votes. Doesn't this prevent new votes on the intended article to be seperate of the old votes on the redirect page? Ideally we would need to move the votes on the redirect page to the new page or at least reset the old votes. Also, I think redirect pages should be made ineligible for voting. No no, the heart thingies down at the bottom. I sometimes see redirects have 4/5 and show up in 'Highest voted' and the article itself might have 2/5, so the heart votes aren't added together. 'This file' links on copyright tags

Hi there, I'm back to bother you. I see most copyright tags were added by the old helper Richard1990. I'm sure he meant well, but as discussed at The Sims Wiki talk:Project Message template standardization#Removal of 'this file' links in copyright tags we should probably remove the 'this file' link in order for unused files to show up properly using the special page. I usually look at Special:UncategorizedFiles. However, some images were categorized but not licensed. There isn't an easy way to find them. Unfortunately, Special:ListFiles doesn't list their licenses, but I think the older they are the more likely they were not licensed. --a_morris (talk) 21:19, July 15, 2010 (UTC)

Question about namespaces

Does this wiki use the Portal and Project mainnamespaces? Did Project get renamed to The Sims Wiki? and what happened to the Portal mainnamespace?

PS: I noticed that almost all the userboxes sort users under U for User. It'd be some work to fix that. I tested out a fix in the {{Fan kaylynnts2}} and it seems to work. It's just inserting |{{PAGENAME}}, I'm thinking about adding a heads-up on the Community Portal talk page, just so we can avoid it for future userboxes. Well I'm mostly curious. I've just seen other wikia's use Portals eg. The Vault:Fallout 3 & WoWwiki:Cataclysm. I don't think our wiki is big enough or active enough to effectivly use them at the moment though. I have another idea for a custom namespace, but it's part of a larger project. One thing I miss though is a way to communicate more to other wikians interested in the maintenance of the site without alerting everyone. The community portal talk page would quickly get spammed, but I'm missing a place to add stuff like: "btw, I reverse engineered the old {{timer}} template and made it only display the text, so now you can insert it into your own boxes or just in-line if you prefer. The new skinny template is at {{countdown}}" and messages like the one about userboxes and how they're not sorting users quite correct. I don't want it to seem like an admin- or experienced user club, but on the other hand it should be blasted out on the main page in blogs either. I can't really come up with an answer myself at the moment. Do you have any ideas how or where I could make the more involved wiki'er aware of such information? That's overkill for what I had in mind. I'm thinking something like a talk page for site maintenance/administration. Abit like the community portal talk page, but in smaller scope. I wish I didn't have to spam that with every little thing. I'd personally prefer if the community talk page was kept for larger projects as it is now. Affiliation program, the future DYK section and gallery changes which are all already there as examples. I think I have an idea: How about a The Sims Wiki:Site maintenance page which is sort of an expanded 'how to help out' section from the community portal. It should list trivial perpetual tasks like many of the special pages help us with, but also mention more current stuff which aren't neccesarily projects, such as making sure userboxes sort usernames properly. Admin

Thanks for the admin position. I'll do my best and hopefully I can help take off some of your workload. However this raises some questions. Where do we stand on unused user files? How about images of sims who are older than their premade state or in situations obviously the result of player interactions? Duskey(talk) 20:42, July 18, 2010 (UTC)

If the unused user files are unrelated to The Sims they should be deleted. If we're not going to use the image and the user who uploaded it isn't, there's no point. It would be kinda cool to have a gallery of images for a sim at each life stage. Other than examples of hybrids, they aren't really needed. --a_morris (talk) 21:46, July 18, 2010 (UTC)

A few more admin questions: Would it be ok to blank the user and talk pages of permanently blocked users and delete their sub-pages, templates and files which are not in use anywhere? It would seem ok since you can't come back from a permanent block and there shouldn't be any reason to use any of the material or pages I mentioned.

Something like "registered and experienced users can apply for additional privileges, but these come with added responsibilities and must be handled appropriately." I wouldn't give any specific requirements (like "you must have had x edits") but I would say that users who apply for any position must show that they are comfortable with the wiki interface, haven't participated in behavior that harms the wiki, and that they are willing to devote time to using the tools for their intended purpose. Maybe also state that applications aren't responded to right away, and that a user that applies will receive a message on their talk page when their request is accepted/denied. -- Patrick (LostInRiverview) (talk)(blog)(random page) 22:19, July 25, 2010 (UTC)

I think it's important to stress out that admins aren't police officers, they're regular users with a few extra buttons. Weshould also point out that being 'promoted' or gaining higher and higher user access level isn't a natural evolution and does not reflect amount of contributions nor the date you joined this site. I have a suspecion that some people view it as 'ranks' where you naturally level up after some time, like a computer game. I like what's been done with the admin page. I can't quite get {{Userbox irc}} to work like I want to. Basicually I just want it to add the input of an optional variable at the end if there is any and have a period at the end aswell, but I can't get it to make a space where the optional #if starts. Is that not a bit too harsh? I saw he made the page, deleted by Bella Goth, he made it again, deleted by you and now he's banned for the day? I added a message on his talk page, informing him or her of their mistake. A new user would probably not notice that the page was deleted by an administrator in the first place, disregard it as a fluke and try again. In my opinion, a block is too harsh. That is very true, but don't they get the 'You have new messages' like everyone else? I'd say that SHOULD get their attention. I like to at least offer the benefit of doubt and who knows, the user may read the message and not repeat the mistake. Personally I was quite shocked to see non-registered users was able to edit anything at all. It might broaden the potential userbase, especially with the more inexperienced crowd, but it also opens up to issues similar to these. I'm glad that we can discuss these issue and reach some neutral ground. My personal opinion of this is, first a note on their talk page, then we can discuss warnings/blocks, whatever is appropriate. Murphy's Law dictates however, that the user will repeat his mistake and I'm left looking like a fool :p In that case I'll not argue for this case anymore, but maybe others. I'm going to weigh in a bit on this. I think the issue here may not be procedure, but rather a mixed-up order of procedure. So, if an unregistered user creates a fanon page, that page should obviously be deleted. But, I think it's only right to tell that user, regardless of whether or not they will read the warning, that their page is being deleted before the page is actually deleted. Why before? If the warning/message is already on their talk page, then if the user creates the page again, they will have ignored the warning, thus making them more clearly "in the wrong." That's a good guideline to go by for non-sense/fanon content. On vandalism with rude/explicit language it would be undo/rollback followed by a swift block, in my opinion. This is all case-to-case and I don't think we can define rules for it, but reminder to the user first, then delete as LIR said would help immensely on this particular kind of user mistake. By giving a warning, we do give the user a chance to correct his mistake. If he does recreate the page before seeing the warning, he can then blank the page or mark it for deletion. I'm not certain I understand your latest comment fully, a morris. What you're saying first is the ideal scenario where the users sees our notice and corrects the mistake himself. I've been here since April 2008. Makiah promoted me to an admin in May. There are some old discussion in the community portal archives. I can't think of anything particularly significant happening. Before The Sims 3 was to be released in Feb 2009 we got a lot of new contributors. In Jan 2009 The Sims Fanon Wiki was created. Because of all the new contributors I requested being promoted to a bureaucrat and it was granted in April 2009. There was the Logo Contest and that was when we got the new skin as well courtesy of JoePlay. Then The Sims 3 Release Countdown. --a_morris (talk) 03:29, August 1, 2010 (UTC)

Hey there. I'm quite sure you cannot give admin privledges per article. We have a link to your wiki in our main menu to the left and on our Affiliates page and I've recently added one to the The Sims 2 Pets (console) page. Do you mean you want a link from eg. Bob and Betty to your wiki? If so, you don't need to be an administrator to do that, but remember that it works both ways. Personally I think it would be a bad idea to link every page on your wiki to the corresponding one here and vice-versa. In the contest idea thing I only see the following:

• Photography contest

I think we should keep videos and downloadable content out of it so more people can participate. We should also avoid stories, since this isn't really a fanon site. A photograpgy contest sounds cool, but I'd say it has to be a specific theme or motive (scenery, house, urban, party, some sim activity) and a limited amount of entries per person, maybe even just one. What do you make of this? He recieved a warning for unconstructive edit from Bleeh back in March. I have no idea if I should issue a warning or block him since he reverted it himself. If you ask me it's not a 'change of heart', it's rather an insult or trying to provoke an attack since he's well aware Bleeh will eventually check it when she is back. How should we proceed? Featured stuff guidelines

Would it be an idea to point up that new entries always go a the bottom? I personally think it's a bit unfair if people insert new nominations at the top. It could result in people editing the page and moving their nominations up if they want them to win. You can find out about templates here.Frio family uses {{Family}} template (If you are using the Rich Text Editor it may show up as a green puzzle piece. Human --> Sim

Hey A Morris. I happened onto your to-do list and noticed it was quite lengthy, so I took the liberty of transfering most references of human to Sim - since most of these were in the Simbio infoboxes, it was really simple if not a bit... boring. Anyways, you can see here that no Sim pages have 'human' any longer, so you can go ahead and scratch number 7 off your list. As I said before, that list is quite long, so if you have any tasks you'd like to handle but don't have the time to do, consider throwing it my way. I'll continue to peek on your to-do list and maybe I'll do something else. Btw, just noticing your goal of switching over from {{Sim}} to {{Sim2}}... I don't know for sure, but that might be a job for Duskey's bot, since that's a ton of articles that need changing. I usually do those two tasks at the same time and fix up the article as well. If the Sim is from an expansion, I have started adding it to the game parameter. I also make sure the name of the game is in the body of the article. --a_morris (talk) 20:24, August 6, 2010 (UTC)

I found that when editing the simbio infoboxes, while on the {{Sim2}} template, if no life state is given, it defaults to 'Normal'; on the {{Sim}} template there is no such default. How far along are you on this? Since you're the only 'crat who's active it's really up to. I suggest we keep a list of previous admins, regardless if they stepped down or became inactive. Should we have some sort of notification like: "This user is no longer an admin due to activity" on their userpage or their talk page?
