Disambiguation[edit source]

Would it be an idea to change disambiguation pages into a setup as below, using 'Music' as an example:

'Music' redirect -> 'Music (disambiguation)' -> ...links to the disambiguations.

This would mean that only the clearly (disambiguation) marked pages would show up in Orphaned pages making it easier to spot 'real' orphaned pages as you would simply disregard the disambiguations. It would also mean that one could find disambiguation pages who are not lonely and change 'what links here' to link to the correct article.

Yes. I think it is much clearer. Although I don't think we should redirect to disambiguation pages. Wikipedia suggests redirecting 'Music (disambiguation)' to 'Music', with 'Music' being the actual disambiguation page. Although, it wouldn't prevent users from linking to 'Music' accidentally, but it would be easier to find them and fix them. Usually you shouldn't link to a disambiguation page, you should like to the specific page. A page should only link to the disambiguation page to notify users that there are other pages of a similar topic or title that they may be looking for instead. We would use 'Music (disambiguation)' for that purpose. That way if someone links to 'Music' without realizing it is a disambiguation page we can tell that the link needs to be directed to the specific page. --a_morris (talk) 20:58, August 8, 2010 (UTC)

On the disambiguation and orphaned pages discussion, I'd like to argument that if you redirect from the main article (eg. Fish), to the disambiguation page (eg. Fish (disambiguation)), it is easy to disregard that page when it's orphaned. As an example I keep finding myself click on the worthington household and other disambiguation pages without the (disambiguation) suffix. If we fix all the links for all disambiguation pages one day, orphaned pages will be littered with articles like these, making it almost impossible to find new legitimate orphaned pages. In the example above, the redirect 'Fish' will still how up in the special disambig page if someone mistakingly links to it. Duskey(talk) 21:12, August 15, 2010 (UTC)

Then if we do structure it the other way (the way Wikipedia suggests), then neither will be orphans. i.e. pages with similar titles will soft redirect to the page with the (disambiguation) suffix and that article will hard redirect to the real disambiguation page. Once we clean up the mistakenly linked pages there will still be the hard redirect from the '(disambiguation)' page and only the redirect should show up in the special disamig page. --a_morris (talk) 00:37, August 16, 2010 (UTC)

Families with the same name[edit source]

Perhaps we should agree having the first family with the name keep the page and link to the new one through distinguish? This would eliminate the need for a disambiguation page, but it could still be created. Duskey(talk) 14:23, August 18, 2010 (UTC)

I would say the one which appears in a game first, some games come with Sims with the same name, maybe prioritize townies over NPCs? How would you structure it? Let's use the Kim family as an example: At the moment it's 'Kim family (Sims 2)', 'Kim family (Sims 3)' & 'Kim family' as the disambig. Personally I'd redirect 'Kim family' to 'Kim family (Sims 2)' and make sure Sims 2 & Sims 3 link to each other through distinguish links. Templates[edit source]

FA templates
Are we using any of the numbered FA templates? Nothing links to them as far as I can tell and their subst uses it non-existant because of the previous featured article list. Duskey(talk) 10:40, August 15, 2010 (UTC)

Newpage templates

They fill in a new page automatically, similar to if you copied & pasted. They are never transcluded so subst is unnecessary. See MediaWiki:Newarticletext. --a_morris (talk) 15:34, August 15, 2010 (UTC)

List of Sims[edit source]

There're some orphaned Sims in Special:LonelyPages. I don't mind adding them, but where do I do that? List of Sims (alpha)? Isn't it "double-work" if I have to add them to that list and then the list with Sims by games and then List of Sims from x game and all that? :s Duskey(talk) 07:17, August 17, 2010 (UTC)

I'm just chiming in here. I think it should be discussed or at least people shoule be made aware on the community portal talk page. Like many projects, I think it needs a driving force behind it. By that I mean someone who builds it up and takes cares of it while it grows. I believe that the idea behind the admin positions, to name an example. If someone is willing to do that, I think it would be a cool idea. We could answer questions and then link to our page where you can find the information, or it would be a incentive to add some information we might not have thought neccesary before. Template includeonly[edit source]

The includeonly means to only show in the article the template is transcluded in or, alternatively, to show how the template is structured by showing the parameters on the template page (instead of the value). It is normally used in the output.

Ex. 1 {{#if: {{{1}}} | '''{{{1}}}''' }} results in {{{1}}} in both the template and the article.

Ex. 2 {{#if: {{{1}}} | {{{1|}}} }} results in in both the template and the article.

Ex. 3 {{#if: {{{1}}} | '''{{{1<includeonly>|</includeonly>}}}''' }} results in {{{1}}} in the template only and like Ex. 2 in the article.

New Idea[edit source]

Hey A morris, can you look at this and this? They are these Wiki battles where users can nominate a fight consisting of any two characters, game features, etc. After a fight is chosen, users can then vote for who or what they want to win. It seems like a really fun idea, and there are many things in The Sims series that could be used in these fights, so I wanted to know if we could incorporate it here. Bloglisting not updating[edit source]

I made two blog posts recently for the main page, but they're not showing up. I tried purging the pages, but that didn't help. They don't show up in their bloglisting's either nor my personal blog thingy. They can be found in the categories though. Six months ago, I was a shy wikian who was never noticed. And now, I am an admin at the Spyro wiki. I want this wiki to have sistership with our wiki, but I just don't know what to say. The Sims 2 Castaway[edit source]

Hello A morris. I was just about to add pages for the Sims in The Sims 2 Castaway (DS) when I noticed that there isn't a Simbio for that game. Should we make one? If yes, what parameters should we have? Also, I think that we should create a The Sims 2 Castaway (DS) article, since the DS version is very different from the other ones. Sims from consoles and handhelds can usually use the same templates as the PC versions, i.e. {{Sim2}} & {{Simbio2}} with the game = The Sims 2 Castaway (DS), unless it is quite different from other games. I don't know this game at all. You can create a new template using the master template, {{Sim}} or {{Simbio}}, with the game parameter default set to The Sims 2 Castaway (DS), but if the master template needs changing can we discuss it when I get back? I have few things I'd like to get off my chest upong seeing this conversation:
  • Rollback requests ARE open, they almost always are. The reason GG's request has taken so long is that our only active bureaucrat has been away for a few days, just be patient.
  • If Monster wants the sysop request page open, then we can discuss that, that's fine. Remember that there needs to be concensus (meaning people agree on it).
  • The bureaucrat page is closed because we're discussing how to handle requests or nominations in the future. It is definately not okay to give ultimatums to other admins or issue 'deadlines'. Remember that many users are on different continents and none has any idea when "1:00 PM" is since we're all in different timezones. Use the UTC time format like signatures does.
  • It most certainly is not simple. Once someone becomes a bureaucrat that are difficult to demote again. A bureaucrat can easily do long term damage to a wiki if they are not up for job.


This is directed at Monster: You can help people easily by being an admin. You can even help people just be being a user here on the wiki. Admins only have 2 extra buttons on the wiki. "Delete" and "move file", there's almost no difference between regular users and admins. Why do you wish to become a bureaucrat so bad? Levels are not 'promotions' or 'rewards'. To be perfectly honest, no. I don't think you really understand exactly what a bureaucrat does or why it's important that selecting them be done correctly. And to be honest, if I had to promote an administrator to a bureaucrat, you wouldn't be my first choice. You simply don't know enough, and there's no good way to put that where it doesn't sound insulting, so I'm sorry about that. You seem entirely too impatient, and when you're stuck waiting, you get even more impatient and start acting out, which doesn't make you look any better and only makes me favor you less. So while I have nothing against you as an administrator or as a member or a person, I do not and will not support your bid for bureaucrat.

Inactive Admin Warnings[edit source]

Hi A morris. I added the inactive admin policy to the main Admin page since it was approved. I also checked to see which admins are inactive currently, and only Bleeh and JAL currently fit the description of 'inactive.' Requests[edit source]

Hi. I'd like to request that User:VickyBot becomes an administrator. I didn't add this to the request page since I wanted your personal opinion on it. Now since I'm in completely control of that account there's no reason to discuss whether the account is worthy of the title or not. I've become quite proficient in using the bot software now. I suggest the promotion in order to delete the many duplicate moodlet image whom are also unused. This process is a lot easier with a bot.

In the future other tasks would also benefit from having an admin bot, such as:

  • Easy mass-deletion
  • Major tasks even on protected pages
  • Moving multiple images easily (to make them show in the file search which only takes file names)

Right now anything that is put into the economic status parameter will become a category.

I sent a message to Wikia staff, and posted the response I got at User blog:Dharden/Response from Wikia about achievements . In short, it was a sponsored "premium achievement", and allowing it requires enabling achievements overall. I was told "We have been doing this with a few wikis but this was the first wiki that didn't have Achievements enabled (much less the first one that had said they didn't want it), so the policy on this matter was not clear." IOW, Staff admits that a mistake was made but says they are under contract and will honor it. I think that the console, handheld, and mobile games project should be separated into three individual projects, the sections on the Sims template should also separate, and, they should be referred to as just a console game, handheld game, or mobile game in The Sims series. I agree that their may need to be more differentiation between the three media, however you should take it up on the Community Portal. If you are looking for something to do, take a look at The Sims Wiki:Todo/Bustin' Out Sims. Inactive admin policy[edit source]

I would like to propose a new section to the policy:If a person is recently "promoted" and they leave or go absent without a valid reason,there rights are revoked.Does this sound okay if not feel free to change it or scrap it altogether.--Monster2821 talk 22:34, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

I don't think it is necessary to have a separate policy for the recently promoted. The admin doing the promoting would be better to check if they have been on recently before giving the promotion or asking the user if they still want to be promoted if the request is not recent. --a_morris (talk) 01:26, November 26, 2010 (UTC)

Now, before a_morris says anything, I would like to say something. No, I really don't think that, the Request for Bureaucrat rights should not be open. Question about applying for positions[edit source]

Just for the record, I do have a user in mind for a specific position, and I want to know the procedure for filling a position before I go ahead. Would it be out-of-line in your opinion for me to nominate a user for an open position?
The positions are open to any trusted member, though they might need to be promoted to be able to do the job. They can apply on the rfa page, unless you think positions deserve their own page.
