Build Mode is one of three modes in the game (the others being [[Live mode]] and [[Buy mode]]) in which you may perform construction-related operations such as laying down walls and placing doors and windows, or landscaping. You can create staircases, as well. You may also purchase a [[pool]]. Furniture and such items are associated with [[Buy mode]].
(The Sims only allowed a building to have two floors, as they were switched between with tab or the button in the control panel as opposed to moving up or down through them. There were cheats to get around this and build further floors (I think - user had patched version which did not allow all cheats). The Sims 2 allowed for five floors (foundations/cellars included), although some community lots have more floors (which are inaccessible).
