Cars are much more animated and interactive in The Sims 2 than in any other game in the series. Sims open the doors to get in or out of a car, and will even open a door (albeit remotely) to let a dog or cat in or out. When leaving or returning to a residential lot, a car will be shown pulling into or out of the driveway if there is room for that animation to play.TS2:NLTS2:FT Build and buy modes will be disabled when a car is pulling in or out, and will be re-enabled once the car drives off the lot, or once it is parked in the driveway and Sims have exited the vehicle. If the route is blocked, or if there is no room for the animation to play, the vehicle and the Sims in it will simply teleport to their destination.

With the exception of toddlers and babies, anyone can enter and ride in a car, although only teens and older can drive. Dogs and cats can be taken for a ride and will use a carpool for work. However, puppies and kittens cannot ride in a vehicle.TS2:P

With Nightlife or Freetime, Sims can purchase and own cars of their own. Cars are found in the miscellaneous section of the buy mode catalog. The player can "Change Owner" of the vehicle, by clicking on it and choosing the household member to acquire it. In the pie menu, the ownership of a vehicle is indicated by Sim whose name has the text-form arrow brackets. The Sim who owns a car will not have carpool come for them, and instead they will autonomously head for the car when it is time to go to work or school. However, the school bus will still come for teens, and driving to school instead of taking the bus will still trigger the minor fear of missing the school bus. Selecting one Sim as the owner will not affect other family members' ability to use the car to visit community lots.
Children and older Sims can choose to sit in vehicles without actually driving. Sims sitting in a car can turn on the vehicle's lights and the stereo. If two or more Sims are sitting in the car, they will autonomously socialize. Sims can even WooHoo in cars, complete with rocking motion and fogged-up windows to conceal the view from the player. Sims can take the vehicle for a spin, where they will drive off the lot and return a short while later Sims get a boost to energy, comfort, and fun from driving or riding in a car. Generally, more expensive cars give a greater boost, but this does not always hold for custom-content cars.

When Sims get out of a car on a residential lot after arriving, they will have a "Watch Out!" action pushed on them if they take too long to get off the driveway. This will override almost everything in a Sim's queue, and forces the Sim to get off the driveway. Actions such as bringing in a grocery basket will not be affected.
A driveway has a 5x8 section that a car can be placed on, a 5x2 section that connects it to the street, and a 12x3 section which is at a right angle to the rest of the driveway. This section is placed over the street, and is used when cars back out of or pull into the driveway. Cars will enter and leave the lot in the same way as the carpool or taxi. Some pre-made residential lots do not have room for a driveway, and require modifications by the player in order to provide room for one. Normally, a driveway cannot be placed unless there is room for the entire street section; however, later expansions allow the player to override this by using the moveobjects on cheat. Since a driveway placed in this manner will not have room to show a car backing out of or pulling into a driveway, a car placed on it will fade out when Sims drive off, and fade in when they return. This will also happen, at least to some extent, when a car enters or leaves a driveway space that is blocked by another car.

In early neighborhood pictures before The Sims 2 was released, some houses had driveways and garage doors, suggesting that ownable cars were originally intended for the base game. Something else to support this is that there is a buyable and ownable car, but it only appears if it is made to appear in a category, and doesn't work correctly.
