A CTD can happen in games of The Sims series when custom content is installed which is incompatible with the version of the game the user owns. (e.g. You only have The Sims 2 base game when custom content you have installed requires The Sims 2: Seasons). A CTD can also happen if there is a bug or glitch in a custom object.

Since there are multiple reasons why your sims game will have a CTD a lot of these fixes are "hit or miss". Some users have CTDs because of user-hardware incompatibilties: their machine only reaches the minimum requirements (and they have their settings too high), their machine is far too powerful (belive it or not [fixing this requires moding the .exe to never atempt to use more than 2gb of ram]), and other less common (and more difficult to fix) hardware issues. Other's still have crashes because of incompatable mods they have installed or other user-software changes.

If you are running any mods, you should look at this (excellent) help thread made on ModTheSims.com, as I will not be repeating all the tips listed on that page.
