Sometimes praising an employee for their work just won't cut it and will ask for a promotion to which it is up to the Sims decision whether or not to promote them. Not doing so will lower the employees relationship with the employer and risk them quitting.
 
Employees for both Retail and Restaurant are dictated by four things: Mood, Skill, Work Hours, and Pay/Promotion.
