Alani was born in Sunlit Tides to Persephone and Jack Hapakuka in 1996. Alani was born a very heavy baby, the weight stuck with Alani throughout her life. When she first arrived at school, she was mocked for her weight, but Alani held her head high and blocked them out. When Alani started junior school, the mocking stopped for two years. However, tragedy struck the Hapakuka household when an earthquake caused the death of Jack in 2005, Alani dealt with the pain very well, but one child in Alani's class, Lily Nakuma, brought up Alani's weight once again. Alani flipped out, and tackled her to the ground, under the severe weight of Alani, Lily started suffocating. Alani did not realise this until Lily passed out. Alani had crushed her trachea, Lily died 2 days later. Alani was expelled, and under the new guilt, at age 12, tried to jump off a bridge, Alani was saved by lifeguard Thomas Gale, who she fell in love with. Thomas asked Alani to the end of year prom at secondary school, Thomas had to leave Sunlit Tides, but Alani still had the memories of Thomas in her mind making her happier than ever.▼
