Onomatology[edit | edit source]

  • Osbourne: ???
  • Jill: Short for Gillian, which is the English form of Julia, which is the feminine version of Julian which means downy beard.
  • Jack: Short for John, meaning "Graced by God" in Hebrew
  • Jesamine: ???
  • Marty: Short for Martin, which is derived from Martinus which was usually associated with the God of War
  • Ross: May be thought of as a transferred surname, but the word itself comes from the Gaelic term 'ros' meaning 'headland'
  • Maddy: A shortening of Madeline, a feminine name of Hebrew origin, and in its original form it can be found as Magdalene which means ‘From Magdala’, the name of a town which was the birthplace of Saint Mary Magdalene
  • Nancy: A pet form of the Latin name Ann

(If you know onomatology that I don't, please add it in!)
