The reason for this change of heart is believed to be the birth of her only son, Moss Rose. The circumstances of his spawning were largely covered up by the elders at the time, although his sudden and unseasonal arrival was difficult to conceal. Through raising her own son and Oak's, Willow gained a reputation for being an excellent leader: always understanding Moss's difficulties, but firmly dealing with Reed's moods. Since the death of her ancestors she has assumed the role of head of the family and has continued to assist in the upbringing of all of her and Oak's descendants.

Willow is first seen at the Spring Council. Although she takes a secondary role in the actual leadership of the ceremony, she very clearly retains her authority over the others, dealing firmly with Larch and Reed's bickering. After the council, Oak confides in her that he has concerns about Larch's behaviour. Willow reassures him, but she harbours her own doubts about Larch, whose actions are causing her great personal and professional disquiet.

Throughout the following weeks, Willow resolves to keep a close eye on Larch - and, after a few days, Lily - in order to predict what may happen. She dismisses Reed's warnings about Larch's actions and defends her controversial position as his staunch advocate, but the discovery of Lily's sudden mysterious illness arouses her growing suspicion even further. Although it seems like something out of a fairytale, the possibility seems increasingly likely that they must expect the arrival of a human child very soon, not to mention the dangers associated with this. Her suspicions are all but confirmed when Oak reports Larch's questions on the subject of PlantSim reproduction.

At this, she embarks upon a plan to prepare for the worst case scenario. She instructs Oak to give Lily a full medical check as soon as she comes out of quarantine, Moss to prepare a top secret defence mechanism and Larch to take over as temporary Nurturer (to keep him out of further trouble).

When the three attackers arrive in the garden, Willow's worst fears are confirmed. She makes the difficult decision to face her own regrets and explains to Larch and Lily the chain of events that led to the births of Mos and Larch, as well as the complex factors involved in spawning. Determined to protect her family at all costs, Willow quickly implements her defence plan, using Moss' flamethrower to try and fight off the attackers. Eventually, she realises that the only way to end the battle is to create a blast big enough to engulf them all, which leaves her in XXV's line of fire. She sacrifices her life in order to protect her garden, and begs Larch to make a similar choice in leaving the forest with Cherry. She ends her life surrounded by her family, and is buried beneath the Rose bush.
