The Sims 4 is alternate timeline. This is a good theory. I feel like the entire alternate universe explanation is completely unnecessary. The timeline has never been completely consistent anyway. Katrina being their stepmother doesn't contradict anything in the original story but adds to the story in a way that makes sense.
