The town was originally named after pirate and captain of Queen Bella's Revenge, [[Samuel Gilman]], who founded the town together with his best friend and first mate of his ship, [[Max Dalton]].

The current patriarch of the family, [[Johnstone Gilman|Johnstone]], is a savvy businessman who made his first fortune via a textile venture and after that went into the publishing business, which is still going strong today. He recently passed on the family company to his son [[Vincent Gilman|Vincent]]. Johnstone now spends his days doting on his new [[Eva Gilman|granddaughter]] and has taken up an interest in local politics. He is the Governor of Sugar Maple Coast.

Unlike his conservative father, Vincent is quite progressive and open to nearly any idea. His wife [[Catherine Gilman|Catherine]] is an aspiring musician. She also has a reputation as the town flirt which infuriates her new father-in-law to no end, but doesn't seem to bother her husband in the least. Vincent and Catherine find themselves overworked at times between the pressures of their careers and their young daughter, Eva.

Meanwhile, Vincent's older sister [[Brooke Branson|Brooke]] has become something of a local sports celebrity as the star scorer for the Dandie Dinmonts. She is married to well-known and liked news channel journalist and aspiring novelist [[Brady Branson]] with whom she has a son, [[Brock Branson|Brock]]. Her relationship with her father, Johnstone, has been strained since the death of her mother, [[List of minor Sims#Laurie Lee|Laurie Lee]]. Recently, Brooke invited her eccentric aunt, [[Molly Dalton]], to come and live with them.

Burried in the [[Graveyard|Goth Family Cemetery]] is a Sim named [[Angela Gilman]], who was married to a [[Goth family|Goth]], but did not change her last name. In her biography, it is mentioned that her father was [[List of minor Sims#James Gilman|James Gilman]]. Although their relation with the Gilman family is unknown, it seems probable that they are related in some way.
