In The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, Plan Outfit is an interaction that requires a dresser to change a Sim's clothes for an outfit type. In The Sims 3, it can also be used for cloning[1] precreated neighborhood and in-game created Sims to the Sim bin in Create a Sim or The Exchange.

This option does not exist in The Sims. Wardrobes in The Sims have a "Change clothes" option which allows a player to change a Sim's Everyday skin, so long as the Sim is wearing Everyday clothes. (At times, it may be necessary to have the Sim "Change to Normal" before the option will appear, even if he or she appears to be wearing Everyday clothes.) The player will be able to choose from all Everyday clothes, both Maxis-made and custom, which are made for the Sim's age, gender, body type, and skin tone.

In The Sims 2 using the "Plan Outfit" interaction allows the player to select a clothing type and change the Sim's outfit for that type to one that has been bought or was provided automatically for any household member of the same age and gender. The player cannot "Plan Outfit" for a clothing type unless there are at least two outfits of that type to choose from. If the player uses "Plan Outfit" for the clothing type the Sim is wearing, he or she will automatically change into the selected outfit.

Visibly pregnant Sims cannot plan their maternity outfit unless mods or modified objects are used, but they can plan their PJs, undies, and swimwear. However, outfits assigned when a Sim becomes visibly pregnant are not added to a household's wardrobe. Therefore, a pregnant Sim will only be able to plan their PJs, undies, or swimwear if they could do so while not pregnant. This also means that changing a visibly pregnant Sim's PJs, undies, or swimwear will cause the Sim to lose the assigned outfit of that type, unless it was already in the wardrobe. Also, players should not assume that custom PJs, undies, or swimwear will have a pregnancy morph. Changing a visibly pregnant Sim's maternity clothes may or may not cause the assigned outfit to be lost, depending on the mod or modified object used to change that outfit.

Using boolprop testingcheatsenabled, a player can select the "Plan Outfit" option in the Sim's pie menu and add any clothes in the game to their cart, which will allow the Sim to wear them.

In The Sims 3, the player will enter Create a Sim, and can enter Create a Style as well. The player will be able to edit the Sim's outfit for each clothing type, and create up to 3 different outfits for each type.
