Restaurants do not need a cash register because Sims can pay the bill by clicking on the host/hostess and clicking "Pay Bill" or it will be payed automatically when they exit the lot. If they think the food wasn't good enough, they can also click the host/hostess and click the option "Skip Out on Bill." If this is done, the Sim must avoid the host/hostess for one Sim hour. In ''Open For Business'', players can have their Sims operate their own restaurants, which require a host/hostess, a waiter/waitress, and a chef. Any customer will walk near the Host's Podium, pull out a menu, and a sales bar will appear above their head as they negotiate wether they want to eat at the Sims restaurant. An owned restaurant is the easiest retaurant to gain loyalty stars in unless you have a bad chef.

Restaurants exist in The Sims: Hot Date, several of The Sims 2 expansions, and in The Sims 3.

The Sims

The Hot Date expansion pack introduced restaurants to the world of The Sims, but only allowed them to be placed Downtown.

A restaurant needs these objects:

  • At least one podium
An expensive podium will spawn a maitre d', who will stand at the podium and seat diners, as well as a waiter or waitress.
  • Dining booths and/or dining tables and chair
These must be in the same room as the podium, or Sims will not be seated.
  • At least one stove
There should be as many stoves as podiums. Any type of stove can be used, and they don't all have to be the same.
  • A refrigerator
Any type of refrigerator can be used.
  • Counter space
The chef(s) will need someplace to prepare food, and places to put finished meals so the waiter(s) can pick them up.
  • A sink and/or dishwasher
  • A trash can and/or trash compactor

When using one of the Maxis podiums, it's best to use Maxis appliances and seating as well.

The Sims 2

Nightlife, Open For Business and Bon Voyage each contain restaurant objects and lots.

Restaurants in The Sims 2 need these objects:

  • A host's podium for the host/hostess
    A black chef's stove
  • A chef's stove, the Tempest Cooktop from Cuas (see right)
On unowned lots, this will spawn one of the NPC chefs. On an owned lot, it will allow a Sim to be assigned to be the chef.
  • 5-12 Tables (including chairs) for customers to eat at

A bar and bar stools can be added but it is optional. However, it adds the "Be Seated at Counter" option when clicking on a host/hostess.

Restaurants do not need a cash register because the player can have a Sim pay the bill by clicking on either the podium or the host/hostess and selecting "Pay Bill", or the player can let it be paid automatically when the Sims exit the lot. Alternatively, the player can also choose the option "Skip Out on Bill." If this is done, the Sim must avoid the host/hostess for one Sim hour. If they are caught, the bill must be paid and the Sim will lose relationship points with the host/hostess.

If the Sim paying the bill doesn't have enough money, the bill will be added to the Sims household bill the next time it arrives.

In Open For Business, players can have their Sims operate their own restaurants, which require a host/hostess, a waiter/waitress, and a chef. Any customer will walk near the Host's Podium, pull out a menu, and a sales bar will appear above their head as they decide whether they want to eat at the restaurant. An owned restaurant is the easiest business to gain loyalty stars in -- unless the chef is bad.

In Bon Voyage, objects were introduced that included restaurant and kitchen counter tops along with a bar with capacity for four people. Each vacation destination had one of these objects selling its own regional food.

The Sims 3

The Sims 3 contains restaurant rabbit holes.

The Sims 3: Late Night contains no proper restaurants, but each bar offers bar snacks.
