Once the sim has at least one skill level in the following skills: [[Writing|writing]], [[Painting|painting]],[[Sculpting|sculpting]], [[Inventing|inventing]], [[Photography|photography]], nectar making, [[Gardening|gardening]] and/or [[Fishing|fishing]], the "Register as self-employed" option becomes available on the phone. The Sim then goes to the city hall to file some paperwork, then they are done! Now to start getting promotions...

The way for the sim to advance in their career is to earn [[Simoleons|money]] by making and selling objects that are related to their career. Obviously, a sim cannot advance by making and selling objects he did not register as, such as a self-employed Inventor making sculptures.
