Serena is a reference to Samantha Stephens from the popular TV Show ''Bewitched'', as both she and Samantha are witches who married a mortal against their respective mother's will. After that, their mother would make their son-in-law's lives a living hell. Her first name is probably based on Samantha Stephens' twin cousin's Serena.
