*Socially Awkward trait does not affect every social interaction. It usually affects more general interactions like "Chat", "Get to Know", "Argue", "Insult" (Teen insults don't seem to be affected) and "Flirt". "Ask About Day" also has a chance of shoving the "foot" into the "mouth" of the Sim asking about the other's day.
