I probably might get many disagreements from this but there is a chance that Bella ''could'' of been in a failing marriage with Mortimer.
Due to the failing marriage, it was possible Don tried to get Bella to cheat on him (mostly due to the marriage and Don supposedly tried to make out with Bella).
And when you read Mortimer's memories about Bella being abducted by aliens, the memory isn't red but green.
Green memories in The Sims 2 are known to be positive memories, so with Mortimer's memory of Bella being taken away for good, it was positive to him. That's my theory anyway.

:I don't buy the idea that Bella only married Mortimer for his money. Bella doesn't really seem to be that type of Sim that would marry for money. Besides, the Bachelors have quite a lot of money.
