The Sims 2: Nightlife, or NL, is the second expansion pack published for The Sims 2. It was released for Windows on September 13, 2005 (North America) and September 16, 2005 (European Union, Australia and New Zealand), and for Mac OS X on March 27, 2006.

Nightlife allows players to explore the new Downtown subneighborhood, featuring many locations dedicated to fun and romance, including restaurants, clubs, parks, and bowling alleys. Sims can go on dates with one another, and the success of those dates is determined by a dating mini-game. Chemistry was introduced in Nightlife, creating a new depth and complexity in Sim relationships. Nightlife also allowed Sims to own their own vehicles for the first time in the series.

A career is a set of jobs in a single field that Sims can work in to earn money. Careers in The Sims series are typically linear, with each job requiring that certain skills and other criteria be met before the Sim is promoted to the next-highest job in the career track. Different careers have different requisite skills and criteria for advancement. Sims who meet the requisite criteria and who are in a good mood at work are more likely to be promoted. Sims who go to work in a bad mood risk being demoted, and Sims that skip work will eventually be fired altogether. In The Sims 2, Sims can also be promoted, demoted or fired by various chance card outcomes.
