Ultimately, I think the question at hand is whether we ignore the voting policy and accept the vote, or enforce the voting policy and alter or eliminate the vote. My stance on the matter is that we should enforce the policy. In my opinion, there isn't sufficient reason in this case to ignore the rules as written, since the wiki background isn't of the utmost importance for the future of the wiki.
