I did it all the time when I was first learning things myself. If you are making it your own page with your own information, but getting a template from someone else's page, then you aren't in any trouble. The only time you would be in trouble would be if you were to impersonate someone else. As far as using American English rather than British English, the Wiki generally has a policy of using American English just because that is where the game comes from.
