In The Sims windows did notprovide much light but were needed to improve the room mood. By Sims 2 windows created more realistic lighting. In Sims 2 and 3 sims can look into windows by clicking the window and selecting "'''Look Through Window'''" In Sims 3 when looking through neighbours windows there is a chance of the people inside catching the sim and shooing sim home. This also causes a drop in the two sims relationship and next time the sims interact the sim will think the peeping sim is acting odd.

Insane and Neurotic sims have an autonomous ability to look out window, this does not do anything though and is simply used to show the mental problems of the sims. In Sims 2 Seasons Sims can look out the window to check on the weather
