Bassinets are automatically provided free-of-charge if the pregnant Sim gives birth at a hospital. If, however, the player wants to have a pregnant Sim give birth at home, the player will need to purchase the bassinet prior to the birth. If a Sim's labor moodlet expires or is about to expire, the social services will give a free bassinet. A bassinet is non-transferable until its original occupant ages up, but it is possible to change the color using the design tool.
