In the Sims 4 base game, bookcases start out with a selection of general books of various genres that do not influence a Sim's emotions nor skills. Additional books can be purchased by Sims in live mode by either clicking on any owned bookcase in the Sim's home to purchase books, or by ordering them online.
===Emotion-Generating===
Some books will put Sims that read them in a specific emotional state. These books must be purchased through the bookshelf or the computer.
===Skill===
Unlike previous games, bookcases do not come prepopulated with any skill books. Skill books can be purchased from any bookshelf or computer: there is one for each skill in the game. Packs that add skills to the games all also add the additional skill books to the game.
