Cheats are used for many reasons, story making, glitch fixing, just for fun or to make a tricky situation easier. There are cheats in both The Sims and The Sims 2.
Cheat Mode
To get into to cheat mode press CTRL + SHIFT + C during game play. Once you are in cheat mode, simply type in the cheat and hit enter. Do this every time you want to use one of the cheats. Cheats can be repeated by typing the expression ":;" after the code. Ending the code with ":" and will continue indefinitely until the player either closes the cheat box or removes the colon.

| moveobjects on/off | Similar to the sims 1 cheat, but cant be used to restore needs. Useful for deleting glitched items, NPCs and creating cool effects. |
| terraintype (desert/temperate) | For use in the neighborhood view, this will change the terrain. |
| unlockcareerrewards | Unlocks career rewards. |
| faceBlendLimits -on/off | This cheat code turns off facial bounding limitations for the Create-A-Family. It prevents the normal corrections the game will make for two parents with very different facial structures, which can result in very unusual children. |
| intProp maxNumOfVisitingSims (number) | Changes maximum allowed number of visiting sims on a lot at any given time. Useful if the game deems your computer slow and you feel like challenging it. Bear in mind there is a reason the number is low, however. |
| boolProp snapObjectsToGrid true/false | objects are not fixed to grid. Useful for decorative purposes, can sometimes lead to strange animations that don't line up with the object in question, but thats about it. |
| boolprop constrainFloorElevation true/false | Allows player to raise the floor even if there are objects or a second floor above the area. This cheat is very useful for building custom lots. |
| deleteAllCharacters | Deletes everyone in the current neigborhood and all of the sub-neighborhoods. |
| boolprop testingcheatsenabled true | Arguably the most useful and controversial cheat. It can be very rewarding but also can easily be mis-used. In order to use it shift-click on a sim. If you type it in the neighborhood window, go to Create-A-Sim, and press shift-N at the same time, the CAS will be in debugging mode. You will be able to make your Sims have NPC clothes and hairstyles. You can even make their body invisible, or give them a skeleton body! This cheat also allows you to drag the skills, interests, and personality bars. |

University

| boolProp allow45DegreeAngleOfRotation true | Use this cheat to place objects at a 45 degree angle. Use the , or . key to rotate the object. Sims may not be able to use all objects at this angle. |
| setHighestAllowedLevel [level] | Works for the lot you are playing, and increases the number of levels you can build. Replace [level] with a number higher than the default of 4. The limit is 4 to 256 (be careful with the number of floors you make, some computer won't handle more than 10 furnished floors!). |
The Sims 2 Apartment Life Cheats:

changelotzoning [residential | community | apartmentbase] This changes the zoning type of the lot. Before rezoning a lot using this cheat, make sure there are no Sims currently living in the lot. To use this cheat, enter the lot that you would like to rezone, and then enter the cheat, choosing one of these zoning options.
Note that zoning a beach lot into an apartment lot will severely corrupt the ocean and lot terrain and is strongly not recommended.
printLotClass This prints the lot's class (low, middle, or high) as well as the corresponding numerical lot class value.
changeLotClassification [low | middle | high] This changes the lot classification of the lot. The lot will remain this classification until the following cheat is used.
clearLotClassValue This clears any "changeLotClassification" cheat used on the lot and sets the lot class to the correct calculated value.
The Sims 2 FreeTime Cheats:

modifyNeighborhoodTerrain [on | off] This allows you to alter the neighborhood terrain by raising or lowering it. To use this cheat, be in the neighborhood view, then enter the cheat "modifyNeighborhoodTerrain on" (without the quotation marks), and click over the area you would like to change. To select a larger area, click and drag the cursor to highlight the desired area. Press [ or ] to raise or lower the terrain by one click and press \ to level the terrain. When you're finished, type “modifyNeighborhoodTerrain off” in the cheat box (again, without the quotations).
The Sims 2 Bon Voyage Cheats:

changelotzoning [residential | community | hotel] This changes the zoning type of the lot. Before rezoning a lot using this cheat, make sure there are no Sims currently living in the lot. To use this cheat, enter the lot that you would like to rezone, and then enter the cheat, choosing one of these zoning options.
The Sims 2 Seasons Cheats:

bugJarTimeDecay [on|off] Should you catch any fireflies in a jar, enabling this cheat will make them live forever! (makes for alluring lighting!)
The Sims 2 Pets Cheats:

For pets: boolProp petActionCancel [true/false] - makes pet actions cancellable
Build mode: deleteAllFences -This deletes all fences on your lot deleteAllWalls -This deletes all walls on your lot deleteAllAwnings -This deletes all awnings on your lot deleteAllObjects [Doors/Windows/Stairs] -This deletes all doors, windows, and stairs on your lot deleteAllHalfWalls -This deletes all half walls on your lot
The Sims 2 Open for Business Cheats:

AddneighbortoFamilycheat [on/off] It enables an interaction on non-controllable Sims to add them to your family
Forcetwins When a Sim is pregnant, this Sim has to be selected and the cheat entered. The Sim will automatically deliver twins.
Plumbbobtoggle [on/off] This disables the plumbbob. (Great for Moviemakers)
Wall Placement Restrictions Removed Cheat -Pressing the CTRL + ALT keys while trying to place the object will activate the cheat. -Placement rules on walls will be removed. You will be able to place any wall object on a wall already occupied by another object.
The Sims 2 Nightlife Cheats:

familyfunds NAME XXXX Assigns money value to a family from the neighborhood level.
roofslopeangle [15-75] Adjust angle of all roofs on the lot
showHeadlines [on/off] (for all Sims on lot) Needed for moviemakers. Makes all thought balloons, speech balloons, and ++/-- type headlines hidden/visible.
unlockCareerRewards (for selected Sim) For the currently selected Sim, they immediately gain access to all career reward objects in the catalog.
maxMotives (for all Sims on lot) Maxes out the motive bars of all Sims currently on the lot. (Controllable and uncontrollable).
motiveDecay [on/off] (for all Sims on lot) Stops/Starts motive decay.
aspirationPoints num (for selected Sim) Applies the chosen aspiration level to the currently selected Sim.
lockAspiration [on/off] (for all Sims on lot) Stops aspiration decay/gain.
aspirationLevel [0-5] (for selected Sim) Gives a big chunk of aspiration reward points to the currently selected Sim.
agesimscheat on Enables aging cheat when shift clicking on other Sims
setLotLightingFile [filename] Allows the player to create a new lighting file with specific lot lighting values. Used to make special light settings per lot.
We also added 2 new Terrain Types to use in the Neighborhood creation cheats: (You can choose these in the neighborhood dialog) terraintype desert terraintype concrete nhdregiontype desert nhdregiontype concrete
The Sims 2 University Cheats:

changeLotZoning [residential | community | greek | dorm | secretsociety]: changes the zoning type of the lot. Before rezoning a lot using this cheat, make sure there are no Sims currently living in the lot. To use this cheat, enter the lot that you would like to rezone, and then enter the cheat, choosing one of these zoning options.
boolProp dormSpecificToolsDisabled true/false: enables build/buy mode tools that would normally be disabled when in a dorm lot.
boolProp allow45DegreeAngleOfRotation true/false: allows users to rotate any object in 45 degree increments instead of the 90 degree increments used for most objects.
