Family relationships are defined by marriage/joining and birth.
In the The Sims, there are no family trees or defined family ties or relationships. Two Sims are either members of the same family, or they aren't, and all Sims who live in the same house are considered part of the same family.

In The Sims 2, family relationships links can be defined in Create-A-Sim and viewed from the Family tree.
When in Create-A-Sim , you can also link two persons of the opposite gender, making them married by moving one adult person picture on to the other adult's picture.
When a baby is born, it would have his/her parents' genetics

Families can also be defined by household but do not have an impact on Social Interactions.

Sims have family trees showing their relationships with their nearest relatives.

There is no "step-parent" relationship. In the case of an alien pregnancy, the wife of the hybrid's father will not show up on the hybrid's family tree, and the game does not consider them to be related.

In The Sims 3, "stepmother" and "stepfather" are possible relationships. The step-parent still does not show up on the step-child's personal family tree, however.
