Marty was sitting in a small cafe with Allegra, discussing their college life. The main thing the two remember about visiting each other were the fights between Marty and Martin Ruben. Donnie had stepped in, and Joshua Ruben had also stepped in, starting the Lothario-Ruben feud. Shortly after graduation, they backed down, allowing Donnie and Marty to breathe a little easier.
The topic turned to the recent return of Bella Goth, Marty's grandmother.
"It must be so weird for her, don't you think?" Allegra asked.
"It is." he replied. "She's been gone for 20 years, and she's missed so much. She missed my parents getting married, she missed Alex growing up, she even missed Donnie and I growing up too."
"I couldn't imagine missing some of the key events of my life." Allegra said sadly. "I would be broken inside."
"Well, at least she didn't miss Donnie's wedding." Martin chirped, trying to get the subject back to a lighter tone. "Trust Dustin to get drunk and fall into river!"
"Now that was..." she searched for a word other than stupid. "...interesting..."
"He did laugh it off though. Dustin's a good sport. He's lost his dad, and immediately became man of the house. He's learned to laugh everything off."
"I guess..."
Marty's phone went off. It was a call from Donnie, He answered. "Hey Donnie, what's up? What?!? Grandad... no... OK, I'll be there in a few." He put the phone down.
"Look, Allegra, I've got to go. My grandad's just passed away, and, yeah..."
"That's OK Marty... I'll see you then?"
"Sure."
It had all become very awkward.
Richie felt like the happiest man on the planet. He had just proposed to Angela and she agreed! Richie was just about to call his mum when Angela called him from the kitchen. She passed the phone onto Richie.
"Hello?"
"Hey Rich... it's me, Marty..."
"What can I do you with?"
"It's my grandad... he's gone..." Marty couldn't control himself and broke off crying.
"Hold on man, I'll be there in a sec." He hung up.
Angela looked concerned. "Is Marty OK?"
Richie shook his head. "It's Mortimer- he passed away."
Angela's eyes widened. "I'm going with you."
That was the end of Mortimer Goth. He had died peacefully in his sleep. The whole of Pleasantview was badly affected, and things would never be the same again.
