Pyromania[edit | edit source]

After rolling in the depths of the pond for a few seconds, I doggie-paddled up to the surface, gasping for air. Unlike those idiot vampires in Twilight, we do actually need to breathe. We can’t spend our whole lives underwater. Besides, why would we want to?

I limped to Rafael, who caught me as I fell. I was so stressed out, so fatigued, I didn’t think I could do anything more. I just wanted to curl up right there, in Rafael’s arms, and go to sleep. I daydreamed of fuzzy blankets and a warm, cozy bed. All of a sudden, my hand started to get a tingling sensation. It was almost like I was putting my whole arm through a microwave…

All of a sudden I was on the cold asphalt. Dumb Rafael, I thought. I didn't want to walk. Finally I opened my eyes. A flame had engulfed my hand, and Rafael stared at me, dumbfounded. I stared as well.

For one thing, it didn't hurt. Not in the least bit. In fact, all I felt was the same, tingling sensation all over. It felt nice. It felt… Natural. Was I just dreaming? Was this all a dream?

Then the memories flooded back. The other vampire, the stake, the vat of nuclear waste. Had I been infected? Yes, I had likely gained a power that no one ever had.

Rafael seemed to read my mind. “Yup. You know, Jessica has that same talent. She calls it Pyromania. I call it weird. But it looks like now, you've got it too. Congrats.” He didn't say the last part too enthusiastically.

"Well duh!" I thought. He’s a vampire. He CAN read minds! I pondered my new talent, if you would call it that, over and over again in my head. Was it possible. I squeezed my eyes shut really tight, and I imagined myself on fire. My whole body, like one huge inferno. All of a sudden, the tingle engulfed me, spread through me from my head to my toes. And then, it was gone.

Yes, it was true. I had control over fire.

Looks like the “Pyre” part of my last name lived up to its expectations.
