Red Eyes[edit | edit source]

I was playing my guitar like a pro, as if the years I had spent not playing it were nonexistent. One second I was rocking out. And the next, I had a hand on my shoulder.

Brigit's stormy grey eyes illuminated the night sky. "Pierce."

I sensed something in her: it was not fear, but more like anxiety; nervousness. "What is it Bridge?"

"Shhh," she hissed, putting her finger to her lips and looking at both me and Jupiter. Contessa sat on the blanket. Obliviousness to her mother's tension, she was still trying to devour herself through her blanket. "Do you hear something?"

I shook my head. "No," I said. But then I heard it: a rustle, coming from the front. I didn't want to get up and frighten off whatever might be there, so I instead decided to wait and see what was there: if it was a threat than I would chase it off: but the only things in danger were Contessa, Jupiter, and two or three Plasma Fruit.

My eyes could pierce through the night sky better than someone wearing night-vision goggles. My bright blue irises would probably frighten off any predators, but I couldn't be sure...

Suddenly I saw something that for a second I thought I might not want to see: a pair of red eyes staring straight at me. I felt Brigit tense around my arm, and heard Jupiter scuttle behind us, as if we were a nearly impenetrable wall of undead protection. I was about to make a lunge for the creature when I heard it speak, softly at first but it got increasingly louder:

"It's not safe to be out here at night, especially with a harmless baby and a human, Pierce. Babies feed the wolves, Pierce. Humans... Well, they feed vampires."

I groaned, and I pictured the owner of those red eyes smirking at me. They came forward, stooping down and grabbing a plasma fruit. The blond hair tickled my nose.

"How've you been, Nisha?"
