Fences, which are also used as railings in the game, can be found in build mode. Fences act much like walls, separating, providing privacy, and preventing movement between areas (though there are exceptions to certain types of fence[TS2]). However, unlike walls, objects, doors and windows cannot be hung on them. In The Sims, fences did not have a separate category, but were grouped with the wall-building tool. In The Sims 2, The Sims 3, and The Sims 4, passage through fences/railings is made possible by gates.
