i know this may be a completely obvious question for most of you, but are you able to put more than one expansion on a single disc? if so does it appear as two different desktop icons?

EA decides when and if they want to do that, and it's been done before. What you're talking about is a compilation pack, where the base game is combined with one or more expansions, or when multiple expansions are released together. You can see a list of compilations here.
If you're talking about putting games onto a disc yourself (burning it onto a CD/DVD, for instance), I do not know. I also am not sure the legality of that sort of activity. Aside from that, if you install multiple expansions for one game, the icon of the newest expansion is usually the one you'll use. -- LostInRiverview talk · blog 00:25, January 18, 2011 (UTC)
