Forum:Rewriting general policies
For personal reasons, I'm taking a leave of absence from The Sims Wiki. But before I leave, I want to make a proposal to replace The Sims Wiki's General Policies as they are currently written. I am choosing to make this proposal now specifically because I know I will not be here to influence the discussion; the proposal can be modified fully and completely, and passed or failed, without my interference. I feel that something like what I'm suggesting really should have broad community support, and I don't want to derail that.
Since this is the only point at which I'll be speaking to the proposal, I'd like to give my justifications for the proposal itself. Without getting too much into specifics, I think the current wiki policies are outdated and don't work well for the wiki. There are rules which users are expected to follow which are not written in policy, and there are rules that administrators are supposed to follow as written in policy that we choose to not follow. Rather than make piecemeal changes to the existing rules, I've drafted up a proposed set of new policies to replace what we have now. The proposed rules can be seen at The Sims Wiki:Proposed user policies. For the most part, I tried to embody rules that are already established in precedent on the wiki or in our guidelines. I tried to make the points specific enough to be applicable yet broad enough to not allow too many loopholes.
Since I am going to be absent, I want to make it very clear that I forgo any "control" over the content of the proposed policies. The community is free to amend, strike out, add to, modify, reject or otherwise change that proposal in whatever way it sees fit. I make the proposal as a potential jumping-off point, but the community is by no means obligated to accept it as a good foundation, and may do whatever it chooses to do (or chooses not to do, as the case may be) in this situation. At this point, my proposal is in your hands, to do with as you collectively choose or vote to do (or not do).
