Sims who are in love can propose marriage and become engaged. In The Sims 3: Generations it is possible to ask for the parents permission to marry their child, even though you don't have to have it to get married. The engaged Sims can have the opportunity to throw a bachelor(ette) party. They can then either have a "Private Wedding" or a wedding party. The Sims 3: Generations expansion pack improved marriages in The Sims 3, many decorations being released, including the Wedding arch, where Sims can get married at, providing players a more traditional way of marrying. Its super hard to get them to wed .

When they wed, the last name taken by the couple will be that of the Sim who did the proposing. If the Sim whose name changed had children from a previous relationship, the children will also take on the last name of the new step-parent. It's important to note that a Sim's last name can be changed via an interaction performed by the Sim in question at the City Hall.
