With The Sims: Unleashed, The Sims 2: Pets, The Sims 3: Pets, and The Sims 4: Cats & Dogs Sims can own a variety of pets. Although all games have small pets that Sims can take care of by feeding and cleaning their cage, these expansion packs allow the Sims to have greater interaction with, and customization of their furry loved ones.

Both pets have three life stages; kitten/puppy, adult and elder. They will live through these life stages like normal Sims, but much shorter.

Breeding
If there is both a male and female pet of the same species on a lot and a Sim is friends with at least one of them, the Sim has the option to "encourage" the two pets to mate with each other. The two pets also have to be friendly with each other or else one of the pets will just walk away. If the command from the Sim is successful, the pets will then mate and the female will become pregnant. Dogs and cats can have litters of 1-3 offspring, depending on space in the household and randomness. Sims cannot sell puppies and kittens. Pet pregnancy will roughly take one day to complete.
