Both The Sims and The Sims 2 base games have an upright piano available for purchase; later expansions introduce grand pianos and even electronic keyboard pianos. All pianos increase the player's fun motive and improve the player's creativity skill; as the player's creativity skill increases, the quality and difficulty of music played increases as well. In The Sims 2: University expansion pack, the piano can be performed together with the Bass, Guitar and/or Drums, or it can be played on or performed with individually; Sims performing on a piano will also improve their creativity skill, and will receive larger tips (up to §100 per person per tip) for higher skill. Pianos can be played by Sims from child age onward.

The piano was not included in The Sims 3 or in its first two expansion packs or stuff packs (only the guitar was introduced), but the piano was confirmed to be included in The Sims 3: Late Night, along with a related Piano Skill. The confirmation was made on July 29, 2010 during a twitter interview with Grant Rodiek, one of the game's producers; the piano is set to return, along with the Bass and Drums.

The piano is a musical instrument that can be played by Sims. It is available as an object in The Sims and The Sims 2 base games; it is not available in The Sims 3 base game, but it is set to be re-introduced in The Sims 3: Late Night expansion pack.

The piano will return in The Sims 3: Late Night either as a normal piano as we know from earlier games, but also as a grand piano and a keyboard[1]. The piano will have its own associated skill[2].
