In ''The Sims 3'', Young Adults, Adults, and Elder males can try for a baby, but only Young Adult and Adult females can get pregnant. The chance of having multiple births—twins or triplets—and of actual conception are lowered for Adult female Sims trying for a baby however, as opposed to Young Adult female Sims trying to conceive.
 
Although the gender of a baby is random, you can sway the decision. If you want to have a girl, while the mother is pregant purchase a watermelon from the grocery store and eat it (as soon as possible because they go off quickly). However, if you want a boy, you need to buy and eat an apple instead. You can also increase the chances of having twins and triplets buy purchasing the  "Fertility Treatment" for 10,000 [http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/Lifetime_reward lifetime reward] points on the mother and father before trying for a baby.

In ''The Sims 3'', depending on how happy the mother was during her pregnancy, the player might be able to choose both traits for the baby, just one, or none at all. If you are not happy with an automatic trait that is given, wait until the baby is a toddler, press ctrl, shift, c and then type in 'testingCheatsanabled true' and press enter. Then while pressing shift, click on the toddler. Click on 'change traits for the sim'. You can also  'edit sim in create a sim' to change the child's name, age, gender, skin tone, clothes, hair, facial features and all the other things you can do in CAS. This action can also work with sims of any age, as long as they are not in their carer outfits.
