From ''The Sims 2'' onwards, decorations are available for placement in the neighborhood/world view. These typically range from birds, flora, buildings, statues, monuments, clouds, rainbows, and even trains and aircraft. Decorations are typically purely cosmetic and cannot be interacted with by Sims.

Decoration are divided into six categories in the Buy mode catalog ('''Plants''', '''Sculptures''', '''Wall hangings''', '''Mirrows''', ''Curtains'' and '''Rugs''') along with the additional one known as "Miscellaneous". The misc. section provides a variety of clutter recreational supplies{{Vgversion}}{{Vgversion}}, wall ornaments{{Vgversion|TS2:AL}}, pipes, ventilation pieces, signs for commercial lots or streets, ceiling-hung objects, household supplies and many more. Certain objects may also special feature or otherwise functional ([[aquarium]]s, a radiator that emits heat, a [[fire jet]], the [[grandfather clock]], etc.)
Plants come in many forms of placement: on surface, floor, wall or ceiling hanged. Sculpture group includes various structures and sculpture, from table ornaments to enormous figures.
