It's only in Sims 1 that ghosts can't go up stairs. In later games, they can, though they don't always do it.
I'm skeptical about the idea that the gender of the baby can be affected by the gender of the parent that initiates the "Try For Baby", but I don't '''know''' that there's nothing to it.
