Astrid and her sister Eunice are thought to be a parody of the cruel step-sisters in the fairy tale Cinderella. Her mother's (and her own) fondest wish is to see her marry the "prince" at the expense of the good-hearted step-sister, who is treated as less than a domestic, and is given a poorly furnished room. However, it's worth noting that Astrid, unlike her mother and sister, is friends with Ella.
