NOTE: It will not work if your baby has been taken by the social worker, and I only did this once.
If your baby is not in your house and your sims aren't taking it out, and the baby is lost, but still in your relationship panel under "Household," you can retrive it. Merge with another family and put the baby in that household. Then, put the baby back into your family's household! I didn't actually put my baby into my family's household though, I kept her where she was, and she was fine. This MIGHT not work for you. If it works for enough people, please can an admin put this into an article related to babies, losing a child for any reason, or anything else that sounds related to this?
I'm sorry if it doesn't work for you, but it worked for me. And this is the sims 3, and I don't know whether you can do the same with the sims and the sims 2. Try it out on all of the games.
