"A" or "Of"?

I'm not sure which one is grammatically correct, either it's "he is a Japanese descent" or "he is of Japanese descent". But to me, the former does make more sense, and sounds better. I don't know why it was kept being reverted to the use of "of". I guess it needs a little clarification before we go on an edit warring. Nikel _{Talk – Vote!} 15:40, October 30, 2013 (UTC)
