I think I have found a real-life equivalent to the Simoleon: the Japanese yen (¥). 100 ¥ is equivalent to 1 £/$ (Pounds/Dollars), and from what I have seen, 1,000 § (Simoleons) is equivalent to 100 £/$, which would logically mean 100 § I equivalent to 1 £/$, therefore meaning ¥ and § would be the same value in pounds/dollars.
